1) Stop and go traffic in the DC area is good for KLR break in, especially the cooler weather early in the year like this. Follow the owner's manual, but it's OK to run it over the recommended RPM limit from time to time. Don't lug it at low RPMs. Keep them varied. Downtown would be a great KLR area, but it would be tough to resist riding up and down the steps of the Lincoln Memorial or into the reflecting pool! 2) Yes 3) I'm in Lancaster, so it's a bit far for a casual ride (about 3 hours north). You'll love your new bike!

?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#?#? )()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()())()(()(()(()() Frank, My suggestion is to do your initial run in of the engine for a 75-100 mile ride. Let the engine get hot and stay there while you break it in. I think short rides take too much time getting the engine to operating temperature and the break in you want to achieve is with fully expanded parts at operating temp. I think the most important part of the break in is in the first 20 -50 miles. So if I was to get a new bike I wouldn't even start the engine until I was ready to take a two hour or so ride. And when I did start the bike I'd ride off immediately and not warm the engine. Might be worth making sure you are getting a full tank of fuel at the dealer so you don't have to stop and fill up. Riding conservatively will allow the engine to heat up in the first few minutes. Stop and go riding is ok but I'd be careful of prolonged idling at stop lights. Maybe you can arrange a pick up of the bike when the traffic will be a bit lighter and you can figure a route to get you out of it quickly. On this very special first ride I'd want to vary the engine speed using brisk acceleration to put pressure against the piston rings and force them against the cylinder walls. Then I'd let off the throttle and use engine braking which would suck some oil up around the rings for lube and cooling. I think this is very important for the very first 20 miles or so. Maybe longer. Once the rough edges are gone from idling or light throttle applications the break in will take much longer if it ever really happens. I'd probably do this as I could at rpms between 1,500 and 4,000 rpm to start with. I'd also do this in all gears that I could. Of course with higher gears I wouldn't be able to go down to 1,500 rpm as that would be lugging the engine for sure. I would do everything I could to avoid steady rpms for much over a minute or two for this ride. So I'd want to be on some of the beautiful country backroads you have in that area. For the first 20 miles I wouldn't want to idle at all or do anything other than up and down with the engine rpms. At least to the best of my abilities based on the circumstances that's what I'd do. I did this in Oklahoma a few years ago on a fresh engine in a BMW Airhead. Let me tell you riding like that on an arrow straight road is tough. : ) I'd change the oil after 100 miles and again at 500, 1,000 and 1,500 miles. Then I'd start using a fixed oil change interval. I'd also drain and open each oil filter and see what was being collected. Somewhere along the way I'd start using the NAPA soft washer we've been talking about for the drain plug. Have a blast. Stopped by Cycle M on IL251 (11604 N. 2nd St.) north of town this week and saw a mint used green '01 KLR650 in what looked like new condition (no mods that I could see) for $3,995+TTL. The PO had traded it for a V-twin something and the fellow at the counter said it had never been offroad. Looks like it's never been outside. There was also a new red one on the floor.
