I've recently ordered a complete doohickey replacement kit for my '05 with 3500 miles on it. Before I start pulling things apart, I was wondering what the general opinion was on the necessity of replacing the OEM parts for this? And also what the difficulty level was in performing the work. I ordered the kit after reading about the high failure rate on this, but would hate to take something that's not broken and brake it....

Although there are some folks who've never had a problem with this part, even after extensive mileage, many, many more folks have had this part fail at relatively low mileages. For peace of mind, if nothing else, replace it and be done with it.

It's pretty easy, and there are a couple of good, illustrated procedures available on the 'net (MarkNet and Multisurfacemotorcycling). Read these carefully before beginning, make sure you have the correct tools (including torque wrenches), and you'll be fine. If you haven't already, head on over to KLR650.net and do a search for doohickey. More info and opinions then you could ask for. Also, depending on your location, there are "tech days" where you can be spoon fed the procedure, by some great folks who know what they are doing. That's how I learned my first time doing the procedure. Every few months there is one in Julian, CA (although it may have moved to San Diego). Check the KLR650.Net site in the regional forums and see if there is one in you area. If nothing else a great way to spend an afternoon and met other riders. FYI: it seems as though there are enough busted levers and springs every tech day that it is well worth the effort. Its also rewarding, fun and a great way to learn the innards of your bike. Hi Martin, Australia has been metric since before I got here in 1981, before that I was in England where I learned to drink Beer & Cider in Imperial Pints.

So to get a US pint sunshine package will definitely be a "Special Order" , I may be able to deliver it in June when I'm over on vacation, but I'm guessing by then you'll have enough of your own.
