Has anyone used a K&N air filter on there KLR? I was told that it could let
dust from rock roads into the engine.

I'm with Tom on the pinhole light concern. Used them through the
years on bikes and trucks and have experienced the same thing. I have
found more fine dust in the airbox to carb boots using the (properly
serviced) k&n's than the foam type filters. Give it a finger wipe
test next time you got it off. I think that the k&n gained popularity
in desert racing becausing of its ability to go the distance and not
clog and still flow good while dirty.

i think with a k&n filter and stock exhaust, you dont have to rejet, just
keep an eye on the spark plug condition, but with both a free flowing exuast
and aftermarket filter i think you have to. The bike is getting much more
air than it ever used to and now you have to add fuel to compensate. Dont
quote me on this, but i am going to rejet once i get my k&n filter. Does
anybody else know for sure?

I just read a disturbing report on air filters and the K&N was rated
worse for letting dirt thru.
What does everyone use?
TIA

I use a K&N...but then, my KLR sees practically NO off-road action...at least it hasn't yet.

Chuck,
That doesn't surprise me at all. I like the NoToil brand of filter and
maintenance items. They are environmentally friendly and easy to use.
My recent oil analysis suggests the filter is working well. Once I have
a trend established I'll know more. But for the last 12,000 miles in
some pretty dusty conditions it seems to work. They breath well and
don't pass dirt that I can see as I inspect the carb side of the filter
opening each time I service the filter. The filter maintenance products
are available under the NoToil, Honda or Kawasaki labels. Same products,
just different labels on the bottles and tubes.
Best,
Jeff Saline

Stock. I wouldn't use a K&N in my lawnmower.

I use No-Toil ("not oil") Biodegradable filter oil and cleaner. So easy
to clean and re-oil filter in my kitchen sink. The filter easily comes
totally clean (unlike oil-based products I've tried). Never seen
evidence of dirt making it to the inside of filter or filter oil
migrating to carb. I have noticed the No-toil dries out after a while
(months) so I don't oil my spare until just before a trip. I see that
Honda now sells the No-toil products with the Pro Honda name on them.

By the way, I'm not saying the K&N is junk. It is just for a different
application than stock, or riding in the dirt.
My low-10 second drag car has one on it. Most 10 second cars (or faster)
have no air cleaner.
I am certain the K&N is more than adequate for this application.
