removing decals from klr650 tank?

Post by tumbleweedly » Wed Dec 28, 2005 2:58 pm

Hey There! I'm planning to remove the tank decals from my 2003 KLR650. Unfortunately (for me) the decals are under a gloss coat and I'll need to sand (or something) to get down to them. Has anyone done this? I'm wondering if there is another gloss-coat below the decals or if I'll be sanding to paint and will need to top it with another coat of gloss before I can polish it out? Any links to related information would be very helpful. Thanks, Ben

More then likely there is more paint under the decals, however, it's pretty hard to sand off the clear coat and not effect the other paint. My two cents; try and sand all the paint off the tank, then re-primer and paint. A few years back I spent two months doing this and the finish on the tank lasted for a few years. HtH, Denis

There is paint under the decal. Can't say whether it is gloss or not. It is such a bitch to get the decals off you might want to consider just stripping the whole tank. tumbleweedly wrote: Hey There! I would be willing to bet that when you peel the decals off your going to take some of the paint under them off as well. It would probably be easier just to have it painted, or do it your self. Camo would be cool. Walter Mitty wrote:

removing decals from klr650 tank?

I believe they are vinyl decals like those used on cars and trucks. In that case you can use a hair dryer or a heat gun *on low* to heat the decal. Keep the hot air moving over the decal to lossen the glue. Start at one corner and start peeling the decal off while still appying heat. Once the decal is off, use GooGone or similar to clean up any residue. That should work. - Rich

Yeah but the ones on the tank have a clear coat over them. That will have to be sanded. I did mine plus a new yellow, red, black paint job. Criswell

removing decals from klr650 tank?

I've had pretty good luck using a heat gun to soften the adhesive. Of course you don't want to melt the paint or ignite the fuel-most heat guns can emit sparks. I've removed many decals from cars that way.
