The UK spec guard is tubular, but is quite different from the USMC version as far as I can see. How much do you pay for an 8000 mile service in the U.S? (includes stripping the rear suspension etc). Here a dealer said KLRs are "buggers" (english expletive)to work on, so the service will cost 250 pounds!! I've decided to do everything except the valves, as I think this is really expensive. You handled the situation with more decorum than I could have mustered. I would have told the dealer that his invoice would be a bugger to add up when it has been shoved up his Khyber. Mister_T

That would be a British monetary unit. Just wait 'til they start talking about Quid, Stones (not the rolling kind), and "The Colonies". Kinda wish I had the "wine and black" British version, wadda we get? Green. No offence meant: "Swede" A11 KLR650 "Mjollnir"

weak and intermittent spark

Ive experienced similar difficulty with my 99 klr.I just put a new stator in last night, and heard the bike run for the first time in months. In the troubleshooting process I bypassed all the safety switches, no luck. Then we proceded to check resistance,in all the ignition components. My exciter coil resistance was low,per the charts in the clymer manual.Readings on the cdi were funky, somewere low the resistance for the wires that connect to the exciter coil were ok but in the reverse direction. On the spark coil I had good secondary resistance and 0 primary resistance. The guy at the Kaw dealer said if there was any spark at all it was not the cdi unit and most likely The exciter coil in the stator. At any rate component testing seems to be of questionable value. Good luck in the parts swapping crapshoot. Rich B.
