Hi All - I bought a KLR last December and have used the information from this group to good advantage (Givi tailbox w/Happy Trails mount, 14 tooth front sprocket, pilot screw adjustment, and bashplate). Just crossed 1000 miles (michigan winters ...), and now can use all the RPM range which is good because it is medium weak below 4K RPM and I like to get out of the way of autos. The 14 tooth sprocket makes a nice difference; if you ride off road much and/or like to lift the front wheel, this is a good change to make. Works fine on the road too, for me anyway. It was not too many years ago that a person would have had to work pretty hard to get as much useful information as that which is available at the click of a mouse today. Cool by me! Later, Mike Macomb, Mi

old rider, new KLR owner here; new to DS too; but grew up riding both dirt and street-just never occured to me to combine them - except when I would take my old Yahama XS650 around the dirt track at Ascot raceway back in the 70's and during the mid 80's when my brother had a Yamaha TT-600; but who knew what dual-sport was back then?? anyway, I live in the Seattle area (Federal Way) and am wondering if there are other individuals, clubs whatever that are doing day/overnight rides this summer around our fantastic state. I am also hoping to combine riding/adventuring with my other fairly new hobby; Geocaching (www.geocaching.com); and maybe some fishing/day hiking as well. regards. -rob ___________________________________________________________ Sent by ePrompter, the premier email notification software. Hey Rob, Welcome to the group. Yes, I have also been looking into geocaching on my DS bike. I think it would add another fun facet to each sport/hobby. Enjoy! Mark

Damn expensive hobby, geocaching.... Got into it last year and had to keep making decisions on what vehicle I'd take depending on how rough the cache access would be. Lemme see.. the F150? the Geo? the Sportster? the Seca? the mtn. bike? So, I did the sane thing and bought a (blush) DR650 last week. Pavement, no pavement, no road it's all the same. My first problem: I've got a Garmin ETrex, and found just enough space to attach the handlebar mount. So far, so good. Worked fine for a day, but now even mild bumps cause the GPS to power down.

I have an eTrex Vista and had the same problem when I hit a small bump, the unit would shut off. Pull the battery cover off, and stuff a small wad of matchbook cover between the battery contacts on both sides and that should fix your problem. I came across this fix by accident, but it seems to work. Robin robert bowman wrote:

Another tip with those units, they are submersible as far as the rating goes, but as a kayaker I can tell you those battery compartments are the weak link and are not very water tight. If you get into the rain with them I would think about a drybag for them. Aquapac seems to be the favorite of my boating friends, no clue if you could get it in the mount with the bag on or not. Hmmm, duct tape might even be enough to add seal to the hatch for bike purposes too.

I had the same problem with my Garmin V when using rechargeable NiMH batteries. I called Garmin's customer support and the guy said this was a problem with the V and another model I don't remember(maybe the ETrex?) Seems the NiMH AA batteries are slightly shorter than standard AAs and lose contact when bumped. He said, "We'll have an adapter which drops under the batteries and cures the problem. I'll have it in the mail today no charge." A week or so later I received a small envelope from Garmin containing a small plastic plate with 2 springs just like the one the batteries sit on. It was shaped like the battery compartment on my unit. Dropped it in and the batteries with no problems since. BTW, a few days later I received a second one in the mail. :-D One happy customer here. Hello, Just picked up a '99 to replace my '97 red-headed stepchild. It

Update: Today I did a valve adjustment on the bike (every shim needed to be replaced to the loose side), new plug, opened bottom of float bowl (cleaned jets, turned idle adjust out 2.25 turns), new chain and fuel filter. Bike sounded better when I put it back together. Went out for a test ride and it did the same thing, Except, it will run all the way up to the redline in 1st, but not the other gears. 4500 and it cuts out until 3000. Hooked up the timing light when I got back home and it flashes all the way to the redline in neutral. I don't understand why it revs up to redline in neutral and 1st, but not the other gears. Any idea's?? Final Solution: First off, let me thank Jeff Saline for making me look at my diaphram to make sure there was no hole in it (no pregnancy jokes please). I checked it out and everything looked fine. When I tried to put it back together the friggen spring was compressing all wonky. I was going ape-sh*t trying to figger out why it wouldn't compress correctly as I just rebuilt another one and had no problem like this. Then it hit upon me: The kid I bought it from professed that he never worked on his bikes (he had 3 Klr's) and let the dealer do it. But then mentioned how hard it was to get the spring compressed in the carb. I thought that was kind of funny how he contradicted himself. Well, when I started having problems that's when I got out the Clymer's and looked at the schematic of the carb and, walla!, he had the spring seat upside down! I flipped iot around, it went back together just fine, I fired it up and tested it and everything works like it should! That little bastard kept me from a ride this afternoon. Lesson learned after all this: never, never, never trust what the seller says, especially when he too eagerly takes your first lo-ball offer. Bonsall Baron
