I'm considering one of these but something has always bothered me: Is the petcock more or less in the same location as the OEM tank? If so: How do you utilize the fuel that is below the plane (in the "shroud" area) of the petcock? Seems to me it doesn't matter what the capacity is, it'd be limited to petcock location on the tank. Any thoughts/experience appreciated!

Although it appears that there is some amount of fuel carried below the level of the petcock, the amount cannot be significant. The plastic on those ears is pretty thick, and I would guess the fuel below the petcock level is measured in ounces, rather than quarts or gallons. There is a little more on the right-hand side (the "secret reserve"), but it can't be much. My tank took 7.2 gallons the first time I filled it. On a recent ride, I rode some distance after going on reserve, and put 7.1 gallons into the tank. Do the arithmetic.

The area below the petcock holds a minimal amount of fuel, the shroud area is there for protection and mine has almost no space between the tank walls in that area. You read that one right. In fact I was just complaining to my friend Jeff that the IMS tank has gas in it when the bike sputters out on reserve. I drove mine to near empty (including tipping the bike to slosh the gas in the right side over where you can get it) and the filled up to 1" below the filler neck it took 6.4 gallons. I bet there was 1/2 gal in there I could not use. (except maybe on a real sharp incline) I still like the tank since mine was beat up and had a girly paint job to start with. It would be nice to be able to use the capacity though. Eric A6

My bikes IMS tank takes 8 gallons to fill, and holds less than .1 gallon in the wing below the fuel pick up. The wings are very thick forward and below the petcock and very little gas is held there, less than .1 gal in my tanks case. Maybe they are from different molds?

Just popped on the 6.3 gallon on my bike and was wondering about how far before it runs out of gas, more importantly how far can you go on reserve before you push. '86klr600

A few decades ago, I had a '66 Triumph thunderbird. It also had a large tank, around six gallons, but as I recall, it had a crossover tube which passed below the main frame tube and essentially equalized the fuel level between both sides of the tank. It was a bit of a hassle to take the tank off -- you had to disconnect the crossover and experience a bit of fuel leakage until you could get both sides plugged. It seems to me that a creative/handy type guy might be able to devise such an approach to solve the problem here. Lyndon

here is a view of the petcock: http://members.cox.net/desertexplorer/mark/DSCN3784web.jpg there are a few oz of fuel down at the bottom of the wings that are below petcock level, but the plastic is pretty thick and tapered in that area... markII in vegas PS other vendors have the same tank but charge less than dualstar, FYI. They are usually on backorder no matter who you choose..
