leaky rear shock

I bought a used 2000 KLR650 which now has 13500 km .I noticed a few drips of oil on the floor when I moved the bike today.It looks like the rear shock is leaking oil and I am wondering if it is rebuildable.Has anyone done this ?What kind of oil and what pressure of nitrogen or air would the shock have to be charged to?

Make sure it's not the crankcase breather before you start ripping
into the shock. Clean everything up, then ride it awhile and see if
you can tell where the oil is coming from.

Yes, the shock is rebuildable. Bel-Ray HPV 10wt suspension fluid
charged to 175-190psi with nitrogen does the trick.

Hi. I just returned from a month away from home and the KLR to find
a small pool of oil beneath the bike. After a thorough inspection
the leak was found to be coming from the rear shock(OEM),
specifically damper rod seal area. I think I read in the Clymer
manual that if this occurs the shock is beyond repair. True or
False? Is there anything I can do repair wise?

False. I am currently rebuilding my second KLR shock for a friend of
mine. I followed the fairly correct instructions that I got online
somewhere. I (you can) easily disassemble the shock with a spring
compressor (or take it to a shop to have them take off the spring)
and a couple of other basic tools. Then you can add new, fresh,
clean fluid, (I ugraded from stock 5w to 15w on mine, but I think it
might be a bit much and I am putting in 10w for my friend, using
Amsoil Shock Therapy Medium) a new seal head (the main part that goes
and causes leaks) and a fresh charge of nitro of 175 psi. The seal
head costs about $35 (includes the O-ring around it), the oil is $10,
and my local shop charges me $13 to take off the spring, another $13
to put it back on, and $10 for the nitro charge.
It does help the shock out making it feel better and more responsive,
however don't think that it will be like adding a beefier straight
rate spring, or revalving it, or buying a better aftermarket shock.

I figure that might be the site you spoke of(maybe?).
After crunching your numbers(although a less costly way than the
offer found on ebay) coupled with time restrains I think I will set
leaky aside for the time being with the intent to DIY it(heavier
spring and oil) or send it out for a modest rebuild.

YEP, that's the one. For the most part everything he said was right
on. I just remember a few small details being different than I did
and I can't remember what they were. Maybe I will remember them
today as I do this nest shock today.
