After reading all of the hoopla about Harleys, lifestyles, Democrats
and Muslims, I think Mike has it boiled down to the gist of It All.

That is very reassuring to hear, Pat. Not wanting to get phobic
about the doohickey, I have been tuning out the little voice that
speaks to me about failure of this component and the catastrophic
results thereof. And since I bought the extended warranty, I feel
like I am daring it to fail so as to justify the additional $600 for
the warranty.
BTW, I wonder if any of the aftermarket doohickeys have ever failed?

I can't imagine ANYTHING causing an Eagle doohickey to fail short of a direct hit by an RPG or other high explosive/projectile! ;^)

I sincerely hope it doesn't fail but my experience shows that there is the
possibility of harm beyond just the financial aspect if there is a failure.
When my balancer system broke due to a bad doohickey it caused the engine to
lock up. Fortunately I was only about a 1/4 mile from home at that point and
putting along at 40 or mph and was able to grab the clutch and come to a
stop. Earlier that day, however, I had been on twisty, tree lined Pozo Road
riding at a very brisk pace and a lock up on one of those corners would have had
severe injury or worse potential. Yes, I know that few engines lock up from
doohickey failure and the odds are in your favor, etc. Nonetheless I'm happy
I spent the small amount of money and the couple of hours to make sure it
doesn't happen to me again.

I plan to get to mine over the winter, so I'll be able say that I "did

In almost every vehicle I've owned, if you find a group of enthusiasts,
you'll find a weakness. 2 serious examples:
Dodge Stealth / Mitsubishi 3000GT Twin Turbo - AWD transfer case
gradually leaks oil, transfer case can seize at the most inopportune
time, causing all 4 wheels to lock up. Documented cases of this
happening at highway speeds, no known major injuries. Solution: Solved
by mandatory recall by NHTSA, dealers replace defective units.
Ford Taurus V8 SHO 1996-1999 - Camshaft drive sprocket is a press fit.
Hundreds of well documented cases of sprocket failure - some on cars
with only a few thousand miles - causes camshaft to stop rotating.
Catastrophic engine failure is the normal result when pistons strike
open valves. Ford denies that there is, or ever was, a problem. Most
dealers completely unaware of issue. Solution: Weld sprockets on all 4
camshafts.

That would be seriously unlikely. Said aftermarket pieces are seriously
beefy. You'd strip out the threads on the adjuster bolt before putting the
tiniest dent in one of them.
That said, the *springs* are another story. I believe it was Mr. Moose who
said he had two of the aftermarket springs break over the years on his
(late, lamented) Barbie KLR.

Since the dohickey is such a known weak point and there's so much
information about it on these lists and the net, in general, AND
there's so many KLR owners out there and the doohickey design hasn't
been changed (nor the rest of the design for that matter)--- all
this I would tend to believe that if it was a major factor, and
people were getting seriously hurt as a result, there would be some
lawsuits out there with Kawasaki. I have yet to hear about any
lawsuits, recalls, or even anyone getting hurt because of the design
flaw. Course, I'm relatively new to the KLR world, so maybe there
are people out there who have gotten hurt, or know people who have
gotten hurt as a result of this design flaw. Just seems to me that
there's enough press to make a lawsuit pretty easy. Anyone ever hear
of a lawsuit resulting from the doohickey design flaw? or anyone
ever been hurt?

internal resistance of water temp sensor

Great! a discrepency between Clymers and the Kawa manuals. Kawa
manual states:
Water temp sender resistance:
At 80 deg. c 176 deg. f 100-150 ohms
At 100 deg. c 212 deg. f 52-78 ohms
I get 60, and 40 ohms when I test mine. Now I don't know what to do.
