All those Doohickey talks have me worried . I got me a 650 in June ( Yes ,I deserved it...... ) around 1500 miles on it now , I use it everyday rain or shine to commute . Do I HAVE to replace that doohikey? Is it a must do? By reading the manual I've got a pretty good idea about what it is for ;but if it desintegrates is it covered by the warranty? How painful is it to replace? " When the Cat is gone the Rat becomes King " __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! You don't HAVE to do anything to your KLR except add gas to the tank every now and then. Is it a good idea to change the oil every now and then? Yes. Will your stock doohickey fail? Maybe, maybe not. Would I want the goons at your typical Kawasaki dealership fixing my motor if it grenaded "under warranty" if the doohickey failed? Hell no. Only. You. Can. Decide. --John Kokola

OK John ,let me re-phrase that : What are my chances of having to pull over or fly over the handle bar because of the doohickey failure ?? Now.. I am getting somewhere , from whom should I get the part from ? scott quillen wrote:No...you don't HAVE to replace it...my 87 A1 has just over 5k miles on it. I tore into it, fully expecting to see a failed doohickey or spring - both were PERFECT! HOWEVER...that doesn't mean yours will be. It's one of those "warm fuzzy" things that you do if you don't want to continually worry about whether yours will be one of those that detonates and locks your motor up, causing extensive/expensive damage. Best place is from Fred at Arrowhead Motorsports - he's out in Moab Utah. He sells a kit which contains "Eagle Mike's" doohickey and all necessary parts for the swap, including a couple special tools. Check him out at: arrowheadmotorsports.com. Luc, you'll forgive me for being short with you, I hope, but the point is that way too much bandwidth is taken up on this list with this issue, and I think that you've been here long enough to have seen that for yourself. A quick Google of "klr650 doohickey" yielded a trove of information: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=klr650+doohickey http://www.devonjarvisphoto.com/posted/KLR650/doohickey/index2.html http://www.klr650.marknet.us/doohickey.html http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52954 http://www.klr650.net/procedures/ http://myweb.cableone.net/ensey/klr_650_page.htm http://multisurfacemotorcycling.com/klr650_page.htm Etc ... --John Kokola

It has a What ? Auto shutdown... where on the bike would that be ? I would check the valves if its that old, not sure if really tight valve will cause it to stall. But never hurts to stick a feeler gauge in there to make sure the vavles are doing the right thing and closing when suppose to be. Orginal post did'nt really have enough info to really even make a guess as to what the cause is, could be a bad CDI that when warmed up pukes, could be bad fuel lines or a clogged filter if installed. Hot as in when the bike warms up to stalls or after running in 1st gear for a few miles through the forest hot ? If its overheating could just remove the thermostat and run the bike that way to see what happens. When the bike stalls does it still have a spark ? Change the spark plug ? Never hurts Dooden A5 Green Ape
