what did i break?
Finally found the time to take the beast on some dirt trails. I'm pretty
well a newbie off road, and was attempting a slow sharp left turn on a
switch back going up this mountain side. So I planted my left foot, leaned
the bike to the left and gave her some throttle. Next thing I know, I'm
standing there and the bike is lying on its left side about 10 feet ahead of
me. Obviously my technique requires some practice and/or more advice.
Anyways, I run over to the bike and hit the kill switch, then stand it up,
and check for damage. I put some decent scrapes in the left engine cover
and bent the shifter slightly back. I think the shifter also rotated
backward on the shaft, but did not brake (its stock). Really not too bad.
I put the kill switch back to run, hit the starter, and . nothing, not a
sound. After some fiddling with the shifter, some playing with the clutch,
and turning it on and off it all of a sudden starts like nothing had
happened. I figured I just did something wrong and continued on my way.
Since then its done it a couple of more times, but it bike has to be
hot/warm for it not to start. First thing in the morning, or after having
sat at work all day, it starts right away, but drive it somewhere, turn it
off for 5 min., and try to restart and nothing happens. Battery is good.
The clutch, neutral and kick stand safety switches are good. So what did I
break?
Oh yeah, one last piece to the puzzle, last nite when it did this to me
after gassing up, it also, all of a sudden, didn't want to shift out of
neutral. Had to roll it forward a bit to get it to go into gear. I have
absolutely no problems shifting when I riding it. So what gives?
TIA,
farmerger

My first thought is the clutch safety switch since you went down on
the left, do you have lever guards? Another area to check is the
starter relay under the black plastic cover above the shifter. Check
the connections under there. One more thing would be to tighten your
battery connections and you may want to check your water level if your
not running a sealed battery. Keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply Jim
No lever guards. I took the clutch safety switch apart last nite. Couldn't
find anything wrong with it. Also, if the bike is in neutral that switch
doesn't do anything. So I don't think that's it. I checked battery
connections and fluid level - they were OK. I also looked at the starter
relay connections and they were fine. I didn't test the relay though.
Is it possible I broke something in the relay that would show up only when
the bike is hot?

Check your connections at the starter relay, under the left side of the tank, in fornt of and inboard from the frame tube. Maybe you have a loose wire there. Next time it doesn't start right off the bat, just jiggle whatever wires you can reach going in there and see what happens. Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. You did check the battery cables, right? Thanks CA Stu> you bet that the problem goes away? > > -E

This is true if the switch is working correctly, if it is not then the
bike will not turn over, period. Ask me how I know........
I would suggest that you yake a look at the bypass info and try it to
see if bike starts. If it does you solved the problem. Then the
remaining choice is if you fix the safety switch or just leave it
bypassed. This is a personal decision.

buell xb12x ulysses...
An American-designed "adventure-sportbike"... interesting. Anyone have
any thoughts on this beast?
Kinda heavy at 470 lbs.
Pricey too, over double the MSRP of a KLR!
There's a good article on it in this months Cycle World.
Check it out

Ok, I'll bite, how do you know?
For what it's worth, since I took the switch apart and put it back together
I haven't had the problem, so you are probably right, that was the culprit.
I just can't quite understand how the switch can stop the bike from
starting. I did note that it had contacts in both the engaged and
disengaged positions, so it's sending a signal even when the clutch is
engaged and the lever is out. But what is it sending the signal to?
Thanks for all the replies boys,
farmerger
