Can't speak from experience because I bought my A12 used, but when I priced a new BMW GS1150 last week the 600 mile check-up was half of what you're being asked to pay. Not to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the reason you are getting the weenie is that when you paid $390 for the extended warranty, the dealer knew he had a big fish on the line. Yes, the first service should be half that. Moreover, the most important part of that service is the valve adjustment, and he will charge you for that but probably will not even do it.Better you should stick with this list (as well as KLR650.net), invest some of that $500 in some tools, and learn to do the maintenance yourself. It's easy and rewarding. If you do go back to that dealer, tell him you have his number, that 5000 KLR riders have pegged him for a scam artist, and that you will pay him $190 for the 500-mile service, but only if he makes a record of your valve shim sizes, as found and after adjustment, if necessary.

That's nuts. Local independant shop here will do the valve check/adjust, oil change, fastener check, chain adjust etc. for $150. Learn to do it yourself (not difficult) and spend the $$ on farkle. Yes - I agree with everyone. You are getting the shaft. I just picked mine up last week (I have a 2005), the bill for the 500 mile was $177.00. I'm in Boise, Idaho. Joe

Way too much. I had the dealer do the 500 mile and paid about $250 or so in "nothing is cheap" San Jose. That is the last time I had it into the dealer and just finished my first valve adjustment last week following the instructions on Mark's site (someone else has posted the link). I am no mechanic and I did it with no problems.........except for mixing up the old shims with the replacements and reinstalling the ones that I had previously taken out, so I got practice on doing it twice. Many claim that dealers will only say they check and change the shims at the 500 mile service, but not do anything. My paperwork had some before and after specs documented, but when I removed the shims it was interesting to note that both the intakes were the same size and both of the exhausts were the same size........now I am wondering if they were indeed changed. I guess that they could have closed up at the same rate. At 6k miles all were at the lower end of spec and one was slightly below. Now they are nice and "tappy". Craig A18 San Jose CA

Not to be too harsh...but it sounds like you got screwed out of at least a grand when you bought it. I've seen other posters paying about $5100 "on the road". I sure as heck wouldn't pay $500 for the "first scheduled maintenance".
