John,
I've been using a Garmin eTrex Legend. I got it from
www.amazon.com for
$134 last December. The screen is small but works fine for me. It uses
AA batteries and you can get a power cord off eBay for about $10 plus
shipping. I use a Ram mount bought from
www.cycoactive.com . I just
bought the Garmin Mapsource TOPO US which is suppose to be for the entire
US at 1:100,000 scale. I haven't received it yet but it seems to be the
correct software for downloading excellent maps. I purchased it from
eBay for $70 plus $12 S&H. Last night I saw it on amazon.com for $79 and
shipping was free. I have a friend who uses a Garmin GPS V and he's
happy with it. The screen is just a tad larger than the eTrex but the
price is a tad larger too.
Best,
Jeff Saline

According to "What Bike" magazine, (published in the
UK)Kawasaki sells a rebadged version of the V-Strom in
Europe. It has a slightly different fairing and
instruments.
I have wondered if the fabled "new KLR" would be more
v-twin-ish and bigger/heavier.

The engine is interesting if they kept it small and light enough.
Are the people that design the appearance of new motorcycles on crank or
what?

As I noted elsewhere, it has too many cylinders. However, I will say that
Kawasaki must be beaming mind control beams around. Just the other day, I
was thinking to myself, "a V-twin like the V-strom is just too complicated
for a 650cc bike, why can't someone create a parallel twin like the old
Triumphs or the old Japanese twins?" A water-cooled 650cc parallel twin
isn't going to be much wider than a V-twin in today's age of water cooling
if properly designed, and should be lighter since it shares the camshafts
and etc... but it still has too many cylinders for a bike like the KLR
that is proud to be as simple as is possible to be while still being a
motorcycle. It'd make an awesome V-strom competitor though.

A KLR rider is in no position to criticize the appearance of other
motorcycles (heh!).

Methinks "NO" add $2K for the new and improved.
