I recently acquired a trailer frame from my neighbor that I wanted to
build into a 2-3 rail motorcycle trailer. The thing has no numbers or
anything on it, no place to mount a plate, and no title or registration
from my neighbor. I'm new to Texas, being a Montana resident in the
military, and want to do this right. The trailer is about 8 feet long,
weighs under 200 pounds right now, and has working lights attached.
Does anyone know if I even need to title this thing, and if so, how do
I do it?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

You should be able to title it as a homebuilt trailer:

I looked for the exact procedure online, but couldn't find it. BUT that's all handled through the County Tax Assessor-Collector's offices, and I've always found mine to be *very* helpful in walking me through the various procedures. Find yours at:

When you get the details, do please post them, as I just bought some plans online for building my own trailer! (

Scott, you will need to register it as a home made trailer.
Check with your county's Tax office.
They can walk you through the proceedure.

If anybody would like to see some pics of home-made side skid plates I
bolted to the sides of my H.T. N.W. rear racks, I'd be glad to email
you the photos.
The 1/2" thick heavy duty plastic/lexan should be very effective in a
fall & you probably could just sling soft saddle bags over them without
removal. I use two Pelican 1520's and wanted a substitute for when I
was just runnin around town.
