Looking for suggestions on what to look for on my 2000 KLR650. It starts fine but when I release the clutch the engine dies, no matter what RPM I am in. I recently changed the oil, plug, air filter, and adusted the valves.

The problem is likely electrical. See if the motor cuts out when the transmission is in neutral, and the sidestand is up, when you release the clutch. If this works, you have a faulty safety switch somewhere. Devon A15 "sgsedillo " wrote:

As Zach said, review the FAQ, but first check the clutch "safety" switch. It may just be out of adjustment. Loosen the screws, slide the switch closer to the handlebar, and retighten. Either way, review the FAQ, and let us know what happens. Good Luck. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "sgsedillo " wrote:

After reading the FAQ check out Mark's excellent site at: http://klr6500.tripod.com/index.html Safety Switch Bypass Procedure: http://klr6500.tripod.com/safetyswitch.htm John --- Zachariah Mully wrote:

Make sure your kickstand is up! Had a buddy panic after spending untold $$'s on a street bike because the darn thing stalled every time he let the clutch out when he was messing around in the garage. Asked him the same question... and the response was, uh, no, it was down, I wasn't out riding...or something like that. It the stand is up, probably a faulty safety switch at the stand or the clutch. My 1989 KLR 650 has been very reliable today though the engine would stop at once then come back on I notest the tack would go to zero then come back when the engine came back on . This happend three or four times before i got home . then it stalled out one block from home would not start but would turn over, I push it home .then it started again ,then I drove it tring to see if would fail again so I could find the problem but it would not stop , but now I do not trust it for a long hall any clue where i might look ? thanks for any help Kevin B

This is *exactly* what my 1982 Yamaha XZ550 Vision did when the fuse block connecters started to fail. Replaced the corroded old fuse block with a modern blade-type fuse block and its been running great ever since. Mike A18

Take the tank off and check the connections in the wiring harness, specifically the connector block sitting right behind the cooling fluid tank. My 2002 KLR did excactly the same thing and I found poor connections in that part of the harness. It will interfere with power to the ignition coil when hot and will then start again when it has cooled down. Unplug and clean the connections and you will probably be all right. I have a '97 KLR 650, it has a problem with idling, mainly, it won t. Every time I let the engine idle down to around one thousand rpm it will stall out. I can keep the bike running by keeping my hand on the throttle or adjusting the idle screw. The idle screw only works if I adjust the rpm to far too high, at least two thousand rpm idle speed. I have checked the gas cap to make sure that it is venting into the tank properly, I think it is. Does anyone know of the problem I am experiencing and maybe the fix for the aforementioned problem?
