Has anytone had any heli-arc welding done on any motorcycle? what
where the results? I am thinking of welding a small stud on my
waterpump shaft. will the voltage damage any thing?

This just in from "The Great White North",
Where welding is concerned I've always understood that the current will take
the shortest path from the electrode to the ground. I've welded on many
vehicles with no problems at all however I always disconnect the battery
before I do so. Place the ground clamp electrode as close to the point you
are welding and go for it. It's probably a good idea to disconnect the CDI
unit as a precaution.
I'd make sure the tank is covered with a wet towel just in case......
Have a fire extinguisher close by and do it in the yard, not the garage.
Cheers,

welding on bike-will it damage electronics?

I just welded a small bracket on my KLR650 frame. I did just as Dave
Watkins suggested in his Post. I put a soaking wet towel over the
tank & seat & put wet rags all around the area I was welding to catch
the hot sparks, etc. I disconnected both the positive & negative
battery terminals & isolated these terminals so the didn't contact
the frame. Made sure there was no leaking gas & also had a fire
extinguisher at the ready. The bike started & there were no
problems with the ignition or charging system. As for welding the
water pump shaft, I'm not too sure about that. Pete A16

Yeah, take the tank off the bike, set it in a corner, and cover it with
a wet towel...

I haven't on the KLR, but I have on other bikes with no problems.
General rules, however, try not to ground through a joint, and NEVER through a bearing. Your grounding electrode needs to be connected directly to the piece you are welding. If I take you literally about welding to the water pump shaft (the rotating thingy), you need the grounding electrode on the shaft and NOT the engine/pump case. Running current through a bearing surface, or bearings, can damage/destroy them.

He's probably concerned, and rightfully so, about the high-frequency
start from the stinger. It's in the radio range.

I know this is an old thread but when I searched on "frame" and
"weld"
it was the only thing I found relevant.
I've got a broken cross brace on my KLX650. It's under the fender
and
is where two of the four bolts that hold the rear rack are bolted to
the frame. The cross brace doesn't seem to be too critical and I'd
probably only loose my tail pack if it were to break. All the same,
I'd like to fix it.
I've got a 110V MIG but I'm by no means a welder. If it were a KLR,
I'd take the subframe off to weld it but since the KLX frame is one
piece, I can't do that. I plan to remove the battery and tank prior
to
tackling this job. Am I likely to fry anything electronics? (Frying
my hand is a foregone conclusion) Any words of wisdom? It's been
two
years since the last update to this thread.
Thanks,
Ray

The only danger is from heat or "flying slag". Welding the frame should not harm your electronics, provided they're not in the immediate vicinity of the weld.

Scott

If you can shield nearby wiring etc. with a bit of light sheet metal,
it should reduce the problem of barbecued wiring or other bits that
might melt.

If it's what I think your talking about, it's normal. The only thing
your saying that doesn't fit the description of what I have heard (and
many others) is that you hear it even though the engine rpm's change.
The hammer sound that I hear is very distinct when you take off from a
stop and your lugging the motor a bit, or if your just sitting or
standing next to your bike and you blip the throttle, you can hear
it "hammer" just once or twice really quick before the rpms go up.
This sound has been heard and voiced many many times before. It
doesn't sound right, but it's a KLR signature and nothing to worry
about at all. Mine has been doing it for over 46,000 miles.
