I just switched my A16 to Mobil 1 20w50 at 5500 miles. This is the
first time I have ever used synthetic in anything. What an amazing
difference!
The gearbox feels so much smoother, I was so used to the clunking that
came with each shift. I also always had problems lugging if I let the
revs drop to 2k, now I can practically crawl through the gears.
My last bike was a Honda 350XL, I always felt my KLR was just a little
bit lower quality, but now it feels as smooth as my Honda ever did.
I am one happy guy.

I have done the same with all my bikes. The caution is you MUST make
sure you are not using oil between changes. Anything less than 1/2
quart down after 3,000 is using oil to me. Only then can you be sure
rings are sealed. Synthetic is 7X more slippery and will not help the
rings seat, if not already seated. Some BMW's take up to 20,000 miles
to seat rings. My RT and BUSA were fine at 6,000 and I changed to
synthetic. Will change to synthetic at 6,000 on the KLR too, if all
fine. It does make a difference for sure. I also go 6,000 miles
before oil change on synthetic. Some/Most don't do this, but I
have75,000 on RT and 40,000 on BUSA with no problems.

If synthetic will not allow rings to seat, why is it the factory fill in Corvettes (and has been for years)??? Do they break in the engines at the factory before filling with Mobil 1 to ship to dealers???
I used to believe the same thing...but now methinks it's a myth (urban legend).
Just curious...

Glad it worked for you. I switched to synthetic in one bike and could
find no difference. Switched back. Run dino oil in both.

I also got smoother shifting when I switched to Mobil 1 in my KLR.

When you changed to Mobil 1, did you also change viscosity?
If so, the improvement could have been due to either.

Or go for the full Monte, 20-50. Works for me even in the winter.

I have always stirred away from 20W50 in bikes. I want the oil to the cam as fast as possible. I think 20w base takes longer to get there. Especially on chilly mornings

I don't think you can compare cars to bikes. Completely different
weight, power, torgue. Most bikes have extremely hard liners, BMW and
others use Nikasil. I just know it is a problem with bikes, some
bikes???. Never heard of the problem in cars. I use synthetic right
away in my cars.
