Is it a good idea to shut of the fuel valve and run the fuel bowl dry if I'm
not going to ride my bike for a week or so?
Would doing that prevent the carb from getting gummed up?

A Week ? why bother doing anything, maybe just go buy a bottle of
SeaFoam or StaBil and add to your fuel in quanities less than it
recommends. I like to add a few tablespoons of SeaFoam to my gas cans
and tanks on the singles that are not run alot.
Unless I know its going to sit for a long time, like Snowblower put up
for few months while spring/summer/fall happen up here, then I mix a
bit closer to the directions or if running kinda sick I add a bit more
than it says.
StaBil is fine, but not sure if its a upper lube or not, SeaFoam is
plus it comes in a cool cone top can.

Besides easier to get a small tube and connect to the drain on the
float bowl and open the drain screw, than to run it low with the motor
since it will stall long before the bowl is empty my guess, also
draining the bowl will remove any sediment that has yet to plug a jet.

Gas is fine for at least six weeks (the "official line" that I've heard
before).
A week? Nothing at all to worry about.

Hi
Anyone on the list going to the Adventure Rider School in Lachute, Quebec next Sunday?
I'll be there with a co-worker, KLR owner as well. Should be a lot of fun.
