what do you do when you strip out the oil plug?
Posted: Tue May 03, 2005 4:47 pm
by W.V. Doran
I received the above question/email today from a
fellow KLR rider...A few questions and answers follow.
Q.
How bad is it striped? Are there any threads left? Did
any of the case break off?
A.
Its not too bad I guess. Its not leaking.
I put it back in and set my torque wrench and started
wrenching. It never popped. I think maybe I can
unthread it halfway and lock tight it and screw it
back.
Q.
Did you find lose threads on the plug or hanging from
the hole?
A.
I didn't take it out yet.
I was pretty pissed so I just left.
Any help solving or postponing this problem is greatly
appreciated.
TIA

Don't ya hate when you use the Yard/Lbs torque wrench instead of the
Inch/Lbs torque wrench!
Damit!!!!!
Pretty sure I'll just tap to the next size up and find a new magnetic
drain plug, when it happens to me.

This is why I'll always use a "beam" type torque wrenches. It make
me more attentive & can be topped for reliablity.

Thanks to all who responded.
It turns out the torque wrench was at fault. It
tightened to ??ft-lbs and then spun with out
increasing ft-lbs. When that happened he thought it
was stripped. He's lucky his torque wrench is a POS.
Thanks again...

Cool.
The PO stripped out the drain plug on what is now my KLR (by using a torque wrench for the first time, IIRC). Whoever (or is it whomever, that always gets me) installed the Heli-Coil seems to have put it in at an angle, so that the crush washer doesn't quite seat between the drain bolt and the bottom of the motor. :/

I emailed W.V. privately but will fess to the group of doing this same evil
thing on my ZRX...was not my best moment. New wrench, PFloyd blastin, babes,
duff in the garage..well a new wrench anyway. By the time I added up buying
taps, bigger plug etc. I just ended up getting a new OEM pan from mailorder
($100) and chalking it up to experience. ..I don't use the torque wrench
religiously as much any longer ...just good and snug for the big stuff.

Isn't that what a torque wrench is supposed to do?

Nope...a torque wrench will NOT "free-spin" once the torque is reached...if you keep turning the wrench in the tightening direction, it will apply ever-increasing torque on the fastener. You're supposed to STOP applying pressure once the specific torque value has been met (noted by either an audible "click" or needle on gauge/beam.

Scott

I agree, however this wrench now turns without
increasing the torque value. It no longer torques it
just spins.

I agree, however no audible click was heard, in his
words, "I did not hear a pop". He continued to crank
on the wrench and when nothing happened he assumed he
had stripped the drain. All here are happy, for
whatever reason, the drain plug is not striped. I'm
pretty sure I heard that wrench land in a neighbors
yard

question re: selling a16 gas tank
Posted: Thu May 05, 2005 6:47 pm
by Norberto F. Reyes, III
Thinking about selling my stock gas tank from my A16 and going to the
IMS military tank. Anyone know what kind of precautions, if any, I need
to take before packing and shipping the stock gas tank? Of course, I'm
going to empty it and let it air out to dry for a few days, but aside
from that, is there anything else I need to worry about?
-Should I rinse it out with water after draining it?
-Does the post office or UPS have any restrictions I need to be aware
of?
-Would the new owner have any problems getting a new key?
Thanks for all replies!
