led signal lights

Post by Jason Steinke » Sun Apr 03, 2005 1:29 am

I was wondering if anybody has replaced their signal lihgt bulbs with led lihgts. My KLR has been modified to have the signal lights on whenever the bike is running and has dual contact sockets. The replacement bulbs that I bought are 1157 15mm dual contact 12-led 12volt. When I put the new led bulbs in and truned the power on the signal lights come on fine but when I used the turn signal the lights increased in brightness but dont blink. I knew this could happen due to the low power consumption of the led bulbs. What I want to know is what is the easyest way to fix this problem. Is there a low load signal relay terminal that I can install or should I use an in-line load resistor on each lihgt?

The problem here, I believe, has to do with the fact that the blinker module sends power both directions through the circuit, which is no problem whatsoever with a filament bulb, but a Diode (the "D" in LED) is like a check valve, and only lets current flow in one direction, so the blinker doesn't work right. Somebody who knows, please correct me. -realpolitiklr

Hey, Fred, and whoever voted for it, thanks for picking my snapshot of Craig Olson and his bike fot the April photo. That pic was taken west of Kaycee, Wy, betwen Hole in the Wall and a place called Outlaw Cave. We were trying, without success as it turned out, to reach Hole in the Wall without paying for the tour, but the attempt provided a couple of days of good riding adventures.

led signal lights

The problem is that the LED's do not draw enough current for the flasher to activate. The simple solution is to replace the stock flasher with an electronic one designed to work with LED's. The flasher is located under the tank behind the steering stem tube under the top tube of the frame. Walt -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: Guillaume McDowell
