John, good morning.
I used a spare 21" tube in my 17" tire and it lasted about 50 miles.
At the time I was in Mexico. I now carry both sizes.

You carry the 21" front tube. This can be stuffed into the rear tire,
and will work for at least 50 miles.

Carrying the 21" is fine for trail rides or for just running around town, but on a road trip I would prefer to carry both. I would also carry patches, just in case. The last time I had a flat on a trip, my new spare tube had a leak at the base of the stem, so I had to hike to K-Mart for patches. I only pinched it once putting the tire back on, so there were only two patches on the tire. It was the second one that let go a week later, in my driveway, fortunately.> > the rear 17". If only the one tube, I would run with the rear. In twenty years of
motorcycling, I have yet to get a flat in the front tire. My theory for
this is that the front kicks the nail up for the rear to run over it and get
nailed.

You're right about getting more flats on the rear tire...
However, if you have the mis-fortune of getting a flat on the front (and
I've had a few of these) driving is almost impossible.
It's much easier to drive on a flat back tire than a flat front tire.
From my personal experience, keep a tube for the front.

You must be the lucky one. I've never had a rear go flat in 26yrs. I
can't begin to tell you how many front flats. That was before I
found slime. Never since. Luck?
