More info on Deals Gap: http://www.tailofthedragon.com/ Dual sport related pages: http://www.tailofthedragon.com/other_dual.html My wife and I honeymooned up there years ago (had a BMW R100GS at the time) and there are some beautiful roads in that area. I never did Deals Gap (not my thing) but heard its a blast when they are not scraping some hotshot off the guard rail (or worse). Check out the photo pages of shots of tow trucks hauling bikes out of trees, etc My favorite quote from the site: "Over the past few years I noticed many new obstacles, i.e. SEMI TRUCKS and in the fall, BEARS." I think the KLR would roll right over a bear :) jim

Just finished reading some news about Deals Gap and saw this: "JUNE 22: Final fun day of the Hoot and the Dragon was packed with riders. Seemed like there were even more bikes than yesterday. A few more Dragon bites than yesterday with one requiring a meat wagon visit. From what we heard a KLR rider lost control landing in a ditch". I hope it wasnt any of you all out there and wish the KLR rider a speedy recovery. Have not yet made it to Deals Gap but hope to soon. My friends just returned from there and said it was a blast. does anyone know if this is legitimate and if so, when it is planned? Interstate 3 "After departing Hiawassee, Interstate 3 would leave Georgia and enter North Carolina, following Georgia 17 and North Carolina 69 north to U.S. 64 west to Murphy. At Murphy, the freeway would follow U.S. 19-129 north and U.S. 74 east via an existing expressway to Topton, then head north along U.S. 129 to the western edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and onward into Tennessee. Once in Tennessee, Interstate 3 would follow U.S. 129 north through Maryville and Alcoa, then pick up Interstate 140 north to meet Interstates 40- 75 just west of Knoxville. This interchange would serve as the northern terminus."

Not likely. The interstate numbering system is even numbers are east west roads and odd numbers are north south. The even numbers start at the bottum of the country and go higher the further north they are. The odd numbers start in the west. Look where I-10 is and then look where I-95 is. I-3 would be along the Pacific coast. Also, interstates take forever. The final section of I-95 was finally finished in Jacksonville just 2 years ago and I-95 started more then 40 years ago. There have been rumors of straightening US-129 (Deals Gap) for many years. I doubt very much they would try to make it an interstate highway. The cost would be astronomical. If you've been to Deals gap you'd understand what I mean. A good portion of the road is carved out of the mountain on one side and is a shear drop-off on the other. The truckers would love though as there is no easy access through the area. Some truck attempt to go through the Gap and many times get stuck on a corner. Even if they did make it an interstate there are so many other good roads in the area it wouldn't reduce the motorcycling experience in the area. There are some great dual sport roads on the Robbinsville area and off the Cherohalla Skyway. Doug in NC At 12:29 PM 3/25/2005, you wrote:

Sorry Mark, I got the story from the . . . so_of_the_bordermx@yahoogroups.com . . . It was in today's digest. I tried to 'copy and glue' and it didn't work. Using the computer is just another skill I lack. G. Tengai Mark Van Horn wrote:
