If you bought an 04 with 1000 miles on it for $2400, you stole it in the first place, now someone else has stole it. That has got to be one HOT bike.

Man, sorry to hear that. You sure had a sweetheart of a deal though. For some reason, KLRs tend not to last very long on the streets of Manhattan. After two theft attempts and three incidents where parts have been ripped off the bike I keep mine in a parking garage. On the rare occasion that I leave it on the street I wrap it with two NY Foggetaboutit Chains and a prayer. I'm working on rehabbing a beater KLR 250 for a friend that was already stolen and recovered from the previous owner. I can't imagine who would want to steal this bike but I already had to run off two poachers this morning. It's ridiculous. Those that steal around here seem to love the Dual Sports- the irony is that I see BMW F650 Dakars and 1150 Adventures sitting out unlocked and unmolested all the time. Yeah, use WD-40 to get the rust off, and dump the chain wax. Studies have been done on chain wax that show that it doesn't do much of a job of either lubricating or protecting the chain, especially under wet or cold conditions. The manual recommends 90wt gear oil, motorcycle stores will try to sell you a more-expensive sticky "chain loob" (guaranteed to attract dirt and enhance the dealer's pocketbook), but a lot of people here just shoot the chain with WD-40 after every wet ride or whenever the chain looks dirty and it seems to keep the chain clean and lubed enough to make it last as long as anything else -- and WD-40 is dirt cheap and available everywhere. I was dubious about WD-40 as a chain lube myself when people here started advocating it, but hey, you can't argue with results, when you have chains lasting 20K+ miles using nothing but WD-40 as several people here have reported, well (shrug) reality is reality. If it works, it works, regardless of any theoretical mumbo-jumbo objection that I or anybody else may have regarding the usefulness of WD-40 as a lubricant. -E
