klr w/xr650 motor?
Don't go there. You all know you've thought about it at least once.
Seriously, has anyone ever transplanted the KLR motor with a Honda XR650
motor?
Yes? No? When? Who?
Did it work?
Pros? cons?
Details please,

Naw, the motor with the electric start. I think that would be on the same
level playing field. I think that it would provide a little more thump where
the KLR motor lacks. I think there would be a lot more resources for the KLR
motor if it was an Honda motor. There's so many aftermarket accessories that
really work well on the Honda motor. The KLR motor doesn't react well to
even the subtle mods such as pipe and jetting - that's about it. You can do
a lot with the Honda motor. I'm just thinking that the KLR would be an even
better bike with the Honda motor. Non of the shortcomings of the XR650 and
non of the shortcomings of the KLR. Best of both worlds.
So I take it that it hasn't been done. Yet?

The problem with the electric start (XR650L) is that it's air cooled. The
XR650R is liquid but kick only. For some reason Honda does not want to go
with liquid on the XR line. I'd love an XR250 liquid cooled for single trail
riding. The only liq. 250 was the NX250 (had one, not bad but noooo parts
available for it).

"You can't have it both ways" should be the motto for anybody looking to buy
a DS bike. I find owning an 650R for dirt, and a KLR for street, brings
perfect harmony to all my motorcycle yearnings. To paraphrase another
famous quote "A man has got to know his bikes limitations."

Why is that a bad thing? I see the air-cooled motor as a benefit - the XR
motors don't have a history of over heating that I'm aware of. And the
benefit I see is a lot less weight. No radiators, coolant lines, coolant
reservoirs, etc,...
Actually that is wrong. An XR is the easiest thing to overheat on a hill or
in a sand wash. In fact, after riding through anything like that it was a
good idea to change the oil or you'll start loosing valves. Guys that race these
bikes rarely get more than a season on an engine before its shot. I mean
sucking oil past the rings and valves shot. Its an engine that can't be hopped
up unless you like blowing up engines, it is already tuned on the edge of
reliability to get what power it makes. The XR gained its reputation by being
the only big bore single outside of the ATK (and their problem was that no two
ATK frames were the same). Once you had the redesigned DR650, the new DRZ400,
and the new KTM 4-strokes to choose from the XR started languishing on
dealer's floors.
