compression release spring

Hi, While adjusting valves, I noticed that my compression release spring was missing from the device and was actually broken into several pieces and wadded up in a corner of the cam chest. Of course, it will take a week and half (or whatever) to have my local dealer order the part. Has anyone replaced this spring with a hardware store item? What are the specs of the spring (free length)? Or should I just remove the mechanism entirely? Anyone run into trouble (i.e. starter not strong enough) removing the compression release device? Sorry for the repeat, but I originally posted on the weekend and maybe it got lost in all the other posts. Thanks, Jim

Hi Tom, So what did you do with/about the compression release spring, then? Toss it, replace it with something else, or ??? Thanks, Jim

Nothing yet. Just wondering how long it will be before it breaks. I have no experience with this part of the bike, other than knowing it's there, and how it works. I have had it stick in cold weather, making a weak start of the engine. So, what do you guys think about disabling this part? TK

Damit, wish someone would help with this question, I'm wonderin too! Rod,,,pretty sure we can just scrap it if we want to. As quick as the KLR starts, the starter don't work that hard

I think there was only one lister who might have tried removing the compression release. The consensus back then was that it was a remnant of the kickstart and the starter would handle the load but I suggest trying removal at your own risk. Walt

Although I have yet to hear of ill effects from disabling the KACR, I guess I would prefer to have it working, just based on what big singles have done to my right knee.

Did you notice that the starter had a more difficult time turning the engine over at any point? I am wondering if it will be obvious that the spring has broken if we are on the lookout for labored starter action.

Unfortunately, I can't answer that. I just got the bike and it came to me this way. I could query the PO and see if he ever noticed any change in load on the starter... I would kind of agree with Jud's concern about having the KACR working unless one was *certain* not having it was OK. 'Cos the KACR is welded to the end of the camshaft and all the parts very securely riveted together. Removing it is pretty much a one-way operation - for most of us. I'm going to scout for a light spring at the hardware store today. Obviously, getting the wrong spring in there would be a bad thing. Assuming I've got all parts of the spring, I can guesstimate how many coils it has as well as the diameter of the wire and its tension. Does anyone happen to know the free length of the spring coils (not counting the end loops)? I'm less concerned about it not working while starting than I'm concerned that it disables (releases?) itself at a low enough engine speed - not affecting engine power. Removing it would be out of the question, but disabling it wouldn't. I've got a couple K before the next valve check, and I'm willing to give it a try. Seems to me, holding the fly-wts. in the off position would do it. Anyone have suggestions? TK
