clutch action (or should i say "clutch non-action")

Hi Guys,
Just picked up my '02 KLR - the bike is exactly what I thought it
would be so far. The thing runs great and rides fine. I only have
one concern I was hoping someone might have some info or advice on:
-The clutch has no "feel" if thats the correct term. All of my
other motorcycles (Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and Aprilia street and dirt)
all have progressive feel to the clutch - you can feel the clutch
engage and its easy to modulate how much the clutch is engaged. On
my KLR, its like a switch - as I release the lever I get
nothing...nothing..nothing...then at the end of the lever travel the
clutch engages suddenly. I basically just started giving it some gas
and letting the clutch out, relying on the rpms/torque as the one
time I tried to feel the clutch engage it stalled because I just
didn't feel it.
Perhaps its just inexperience with the bike but I've never felt
this much difference in clutch action when switching bikes.
Can anyone comment on this? I know its a vague description but
I've only ridden the bike about 50miles so perhaps its just a matter
of getting used to it?

All bikes have a different feel to the clutch of course, and some
time in the saddle will help you adjust soon enough. But you do
realize that the clutch is not a hydraulic clutch right? Is it
adjusted properly, with a bit of slack, or space between the lever
and the lever mount when it's fully released? Or is the cable frayed
and about to snap?
Just a thought.

Thousands of miles later ... I am still getting used to my clutch

I think you'll find your KLR is exactly like most KLRs, and the best thing
I did to alleviate the problem was to give myself a ton o' slack on the
lever so that the
bite point comes that much sooner.

John,
I wore out one set. I'm conservative and only got 3,400 miles out
of the rear and only a couple thousand more up front before it was
cupped bad. I thought they handled really good. They just didn't
last. I've got Dunlop 606's on now. I'm hopping for better.

I thought I was the only kangaroo in these parts but it seems I've got
esteemed company. Yes I'm getting better at not stalling (been 7 days,
1000k) but I have no idea why.
