I read that the adjustment for the valve lash is to be done at 500
mi? At what mileages after that initial 500 mi. adjustment are
adjustments required? No mechanical wizard am I, so please teach
me. I do prefer to do my own maintenance. Thanks, Mike

Check em again at 5000 miles and see how much they have changed...If
they haven't changed much and are not near the limits like mine, I
am going to wait till 16000 miles to check again.

I believe the manual says to check valve clearance every 6,000 miles
after the initial 500 mile check. That's what I do, though I did an
extra check when the bike hit 1,500 miles just because I had one
valve out at 500 miles and I didn't take the other valves to the
loose end of spec because, being the first time, I didn't know shim
sizes and didn't have any anticipated spares to do so. They were all
on the tight end of spec, other than the one that was tighter than
spec, so I cracked it again and adjusted all out to loose end of spec
at 1,500 miles.
It's not a difficult thing to do at all. I just followed the Clymer
repair manual procedure. There are other procedures out there on the
web.

Yeah it's easy enough if you have some mechanical experience. But..how many
accounts of striped bolts holes and stuff dropped into the engine have been
shared on this very list ? ( rhetorical ) Recently a Ninja rider - a
Catholic priest FWIW - told me his experience with a valve adjustment. His
engine has similar cam caps to the ones in the klr. One of the dowels got
misaligned with the cap. He torqued it down. He ruined the cap. He had to
buy a new head. ( No, he was not aware of what Kurt G. recently shared with
us; that an outfit in California repairs these caps. ) My point is that a
lot can go wrong. It's best to be mentored when first attempting this
procedure. If that's not possible be very careful and when in doubt check
with this list.

My Spanish tutor from Mexico says that since "moto" is a contraction for
"motocicleta" it is proper to say la moto.
