foamy oil question

I got a +10" windshield from Cee Bailey's delivered yesterday, so I
put it on the KLR this morning and went for a spin. When I got to the
gas station to fill 'er up, I did what I always do; I put the bike on
the center stand, filled 'er up, and took a look at the oil. The oil
was foaming up like root beer! I didn't like what I was seeing, and
figured maybe there was antifreeze in the oil. I went to bed, and
when I got up this evening, I took another look into the sight glass,
and lo and behold, no more foam. I just got my bike back about a week
ago from the dealer who replaced my clutch cable, did a valve
adjustment and changed my oil. What do you folks think is happening?
I can only theorize at this point that this is some bad oil the dealer
put in my bike. It had run just fine on the 20w50 I had in it before,
but this time they put in 10w40, which is listed in the factory shop
manual as an acceptable grade for use in the KLR. My next step is I
am going to get some cheap-o wal mart 20w50 and change it out myself.
Any theories about what is going on here?

That usually happens when you get a lot of water in the oil. I've had it
happen a couple of times (rear axle on truck, and engine while crossing
"small" stream). Could also be degreaser in the oil, who knows what the
dealer put in it. But it's not normal! Antifreeze will do that too, but
it'll change the oil into a frothy brown, while just water is foamy
white. Get the extra cheap and flush it out a couple of times, moisture
in the crankcase is not good; it will corrode and pit the bearings. If
it keeps happening, then you are probably getting cooland in the oil,
check the water pump seal.

I didn't see your sight glass so I can't say for sure, but it's kinda
normal for the KLR to have what looks like foam in the sight glass.
the foam usually goes away after a long ride and the oil has been at
running temp for awhile. The best way to check for water in your oil
is to remove the plastic oil filler cap and look on the inside of the
cap. If you see a brownish/white gooo then you have water. If not
then it's something else.

Take it for a long ride and get engine hot enough to make the moisture
evaporate out of the oil.
I have seen right after oil changes that the oil looks that way till I
run the motor and get it hot.

I agree, mine looks foamy when hot. I ride the crap
out of it before each oil chain and drain it piping
hot (gets more goo out), and it always froths up in
the pan. I'd say it's normal especially if you have
nothing odd coming out of tail pipe

Basically you missed how they prepared and planned for the trip. Watch KTM
give up a fantastic chance for priceless, cheap advertisement. I'll give you
one guess what they end up riding, and they are not KLR's.

Hmmm, it didn't seem to do that when I was running 20/50 though.
Could this be normal? I actually had an H-D rider tell me he had it
happen to him "all the time". My days off are monday and tuesday, I'm
gonna try to recreate the conditions that gave me foamy oil, and bring
my digital camera. I don't want to have any chance of there being
coolant in my oil when I lay her up for the winter, so I got a big jug
of WallyWorld cheap-o 20/50, and I'll try a hot oil change right
before I put her away.

P.S. The inside of the cap at the time things were foaming up looked
fine, and the oil didn't smell abnormal.
