Don't make the gun-totin' thing out to be more than it is. We all remember
the "cowboy" and we all wanted to be one. Now, the buffalo are in zoos and
we ride KLR horses. The sidearm is a cool accessory and can be loads of
fun around empty beer cans. But....... if you mess with the wife, the
chillun', or the "special" sheep, we WILL shoot your ass!

Eric,
I'm not concerned about getting along with you.
I know this is a controversial issue and people get flamed pretty
easily.
But being a foreigner in this country I like to discuss the cultural
differences.
I can do this without problems, respecting others even if they have a
different opinion.
And of course we have a different opinion here.
I really don't see the link with the Second World War, mentioned before
by Criswell, unless he thinks that people in Europe could have protected
themselves from Hitler and Mussolini by carrying a gun, which to me
seems very naive.
There are bad people in any country of this world, including ALL the
European countries.
But modern countries try to deal with "bad people" at a higher level
than just personal protection. Education, social reforms, politics,
economy work together to remove the causes of social deviation.
This has proved over the decades to be much more effective than having
an army of gunned citizens shooting at everything that moves and looks
suspicious.
There will always be situations where you wished you could have defended
your family.
I've seen this in my country too, where entire families have been killed
in their houses at night by robbers.
But as hard as it is to realize it, these are cases that carry no
statistical significance.
If the answer is to have a gun in each house, the number of good fathers
killed by kids who managed to reach the gun will be much larger than the
people who actually died in a situation where they could have defended
themselves by mean of an arm.
Do you know how many people die in this country each year, due to the
lack of a strict gun control? They are many, many, many more than the
ones who would die because they didn't have a gun.
So it's just a simple question: what type of society do you wish to live
in?
I personally accept the little risk of finding myself unarmed before an
armed bad guy, rather than living in a society where all the people are
free to carry a gun, which to me is way more dangerous. Not to mention
the risk of my hypothetical 12 years boy playing with the gun of his
friend's father.
Regardless of your political orientation, I suggest you watch Michael
Moore's "Bowling for Columbine".
See you in Julian, my friend.
You bring the gun (maybe), I bring the wine!!
Let's see who will stand up the last.

Giorgio

Giorgio- I have lived in Germany and toured Europe. You have a lovely
Continent, and the people couldn't be nicer! I wish nothing but the
best to you and yours. With that in mind, I hope you're never in a
situation where you have to say "If only I'd been able to
defend my family..." Why would I prefer to carry a weapon? The
short answer is "Because I can." I'm not a strange person, and my life
doesn't revolve around firearms. I think we would get along just fine!
