headlight bulb removal

I'm new to the group and I need some advice. My 02 needs a headlight bulb. To remove the old one it looks as if it plugs in. Can it be removed by pulling straight back on the dust cover or is there something I'm not seeing. Don't want to screw up. Thanks in advance for the help.

It's hard to see but there is a metal wire clip that must be pinched together, then it is unlatched & will swing out of the way. I suggest taking the time to remove the plastic cowling so that you can see what you're doing. It's easy to damage the metal wire clip. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "kenmcklr" wrote:

I replaced mine yesterday with the upgraded BP1210/h4 80/100W. I also looked at the system with a dumb experession at the beginning, but finally I figured it out. First al all I unscrewed the plastic black vertical plate (lack of better definition...). I'm not sure this is strictly needed but it certainly helps. Then you can unplug the rubber wrapped socket. It can be hard but some lateral movents will get it loose. At this point there is only a sort of rubber cup around the mechanism that keeps the bulb in place. Pull the rubber away (backward) to expose the retaining meachanism. It's a bended piece of hardwire that is clipped on the right of the light bulb. Once you get visual access to the retaining mechanism by pulling the rubber back, you'll figure out how to get the bulb free. Hope this helps. (written by an English as a second language speaker...) There's a clip underneath that dust cover that has to be unclipped. It's easiest if you take the fairing off (the turnsignal wires unclip at the thick rubberized part), but taking the windshield and the little plastic thingy off will give you enough room to work. Just pull off the socket, pull back the rubber thingy, and you'll see the clip. Unclip the clip, grab the bulb by the three prongs, and it comes right out. Make sure you put the new bulb in the same way! I replaced my OEM bulb with a 55/100 bulb (and upgraded my fuse to 15a of course). The 55w low beam avoids blinding people in the city and avoids running my battery down in the daytime, while the 100w bulb finally gives me *LIGHT* at night. I don't give a flyin' flip if the 100w bulb annoys people at night, I'd rather them be annoyed by me than not see me at all... _E

Well the first significant rains have come to central CA since early spring and it's like welcoming back a long lost friend. Two KLRs headed out of town after lunch today into a patchy cloudy sky after a good soaking last night and into this morning. We rode east toward the Sierras via the Kings River basin and onto a old back road that rises out of the basin, over a ridge and down to Hwy 180. The dirt road starts out rocky as it snakes up the canyon and into a tributary wash. Soon more puddles appear as we traverse the hillside and the soil begins to change from rocky to loam to red clay. Deer season is underway and there have been one or two 4X4s on this road since the rain. Sure enough I come around the bend and immediatly focus on a huge rut in a long patch of the red clay. Without trying and before I know it I am in the deep rut and without my permission my throttle hand is rolling off the gas. In a instant I make contact with the red menace as my bike goes over on it's side. No harm no foul and I am up and on it while my partner takes full advantage of me pointing out the rut and rolls cleanly off to one side. For the next few uphill miles the red clay predominates and we are forced to employ the outrigers as the tires load up and slide sideways. At one point the road slants left and points up a steep section and the rear tires shift wildly sideways with each blip of the throttle. We manage to get the bikes back straight and roost enough of the clay to gain momentum up the hill. The road darkens and soon a course loam soil provides better drainage and better traction as we ride to the ridge line. From here we come to an old logging operation and the roads have all had chipped gravel road base applied making for some third grear uphill runs with perfect traction and of course no dust, been a long summer of dusty roads until today. More rain forcasted tonight. --Jim A-15
