Speaking of gracious dismounts-I soft-dropped the KLR while riding on the wet grass-laughing all the way. I figured I'd just push it off and pick it up. That's when the spec sheet came to mind-350 pounds is a lot of weight when you're prone and pinned. Then how to extract it from a prone position without reinjuring that disc that's been doing so well lately! The other cartoon funny was the time I put the kick stand down and leaned the bike on the tip of my shoe and tried to pivot off. Where is Allen Funt when you need him?

Talk about dismounting I went on ride Sunday with a fellow klr650 rider and his wife which was riding a 250 shepra. After walking around checking out all the bikes at the get to gather, all three of us went for a ride. Since they new the roads around their I followed them. I ask when you see a store to pull in so I could get a pack of smokes. Well, to make a long story short when I got off the bike in the parking lot I guess I was in a rush or my mind was some where else but the bike fell right over on the asphalt. I was just shaking my head and feeling really stupid but I had to smile oh well right. Other wise had a great Sunday. Monday morning I checked on the bike and seen a small oil stain on the floor. Yep the shifter put a small crack in the housing. Jb is setting up as I am writing this. Chris A18 Delaware [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Now for the $.03 question......... Was it the OEM shifter ? Did it have the washer plate on the backside like Dual-Star has ? Just curious cause I added the heavy steel washer to the backside of my OEM shifter and spare for the same reason, and wondering if it might have prevented the crack. It only took me a few minutes to add them and grind them up clean, of course also a chance to inspect the factory welds, which looked fine on both of mine, but I carry a spare on the bike just in case anyway. It was a moose shifter. I took the stock of because it was bending out of shape all the time. I will make sure the shifter wont do it again next time. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I did the same thing a couple of years ago, when my OEM shifter broke. Just the cost of a big flat washer and find someone to weld it on. I never did get the aftermarket one. Brent

I whittled / filed a piece of 1/8" stainless sheet metal to fit the shifter recess. Then JB welded it in place to protect the case from the shifter. It has obviously worked well for several years judging by the wear it has taken protecting the engine case.
