Tom, I too am new to KLRs. I recently received my factory owner's manual with errors and the base factory service manual which is really for a KLX600 from 84. The new supplement for the KLR650 is being printed according to the folks at www.buykawasaki.com and won't be available until about 19 Nov. They had the best price I could find on the factory service manuals. I received the new Clymer's manual last week. I bought the Clymer's from www.amazon.com as it was the best price I'd found. I bought a second book I've been wanting to get the total sale over $25 so I could get free shipping. Works well for me. I've only looked through the Clymer's a little bit but it looks pretty good. I'm not sure you'd need the factory manuals if you have the Clymer's and the list. I'm a mechanic from back a ways and like to have numerous references available so the belt and suspenders approach works well for me in this instance. I just bought my A17 this past weekend and have learned many things from this group's archives and the related FAQ. I have a question about maintenance manuals. I have seen the comments about the Clymer manual and that for the Kawasaki manual you need the KLR Supplement. I am wondering if anyone has purchased the 2 CD set that is for sale on Ebay and how that compares with the other manuals. Thanks in advance. Keith Houston, TX A17

Keith, I myself would probally never buy a CD based repair manual as my only manual. It's great when your at home and working on your bike, but what happens when your on the road and your bike breaks down? Or say your in the middle of repairing your bike on the road and you notebook batt's die? Then your stuck with a few shinny coasters. Just my 2 cents, Denis A14

There is also the ethical issue of buying a CD that someone created by scanning a manual, when you didn't pay for the manuals. Personally, I use the heck out of my Clymer.

Are you referring to the CD from a guy who calls himself "repo4sale"? The one that includes material mined from the net, prepared by members of this list to be used free, but being resold by rhis lowlife at a profit?

I haven't seen the cd's personally but it was posted out here a while ago that they are scans of the two Kawi manuals (klr600 and klr650 supplement). They are almost certainly pirated, unauthorized copies so let your ethics make that decision and I agree with another poster that I like the printed manuals. If you watch ebay for a while you can get the actual Kawi manuals for a pretty decent price. That said, I'd get the Clymer before the Kawi, it's much better. The Kawi's strong point is the exploded views and pictures but it falls down on procedure descriptions and the two book thing sucks. Matt

A nice thing about the Kawasaki manual exploded views is that they specify the fastener torques for quick reference. When I'm reassembling, I leave the book open on my bench for quick torqe reference (have penciled in in-lb values for my 3/8" torque wrench)

Yesterday I ordered the Kawasaki manual but I didn't order the $20 supplement. Is the supplement necessary and what exactly is in it? The basic manual covers the KLR600. The supplement covers the aspects of the KLR650 that differ from the 600. Only you can decide if you need them both.
