Mandatory, from what I understand, if you go further than 50 miles from the border (or was it 100 miles? Been a while, I don't recall). If a policia pulls you over he'll likely ask for your proof of insurance. I was stopped by local police 4 times and was never asked for insurance. Insurance in a must however, unless you don't mind a Mexico jail cell. If you stay around a collision scene and wait for the police...you are going to need that insurance. begining of this year and the only place insurance was obligatory was Costa Rica, where you must buy it at the border. I was stopped regularily by the Mexican Army and they never asked to see any documentation apart from my passport. They may search you looking for weapons. However, I saw the most insane drivers there. If I was to do that trip again I would have at least, the best medical insurance I could get. There are insurance offices on the Mexican side at B'ville but some will not insure motos. Cam Johnson, Auckland, New Zealand
