I have an '87 KL 650-A, which has almost no compression when the bike is cold; I must point out that I have disabled the automatic compression release, and have had all the valves re-seated and new rings put in. The bike is fine when its warmed up, but if it sits for more then 2 hrs is VERY difficult to start, most of the time i have to run with it and catch it in gear, as the starter just isnt a violent enough cranking action. The bike has 19,000 miles, and this problem went away for a few hundred miles after the valve work, but came right back. Just wondering if anyone has run into or seen this problem before, any help or advise is GREATLY appreciated as I'm tearing my hair out over this!! -tom

It sounds like the rings or valves must still be outside of their service limits while cold, but come into spec once they expand with the heat if it is a compression problem. Big question, have done a compression and leakdown test since the engine work? It could be a weak starter motor. It may be having the same weak starting problem when warm, just a warm bike lights up so much easier. Pat G'ville, Nv [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Or a problem with the starter clutch. A fairly simple test is described in the manual. Bogdan

I like the list with a hodge - podge of listings. I like feeling free to share my opinions. Personal attack on klrlistas is not proper, an does nothing to forward one's own opinion, in fact it lessens the credence of one's opinion. Watch the "News Hour" on PBS some night and you will see how two debating guests can have a normal conversation, while holding two completely different points of view on the same subject It is refreshing. It also points out how difficult it is to know what is the correct path to choose, when attempting to make an educated decision about anything. I usually find that the point they were discussing, is not as simple or as clear-cut as I had thought, and I often can't decide with which person I agree. I usually decide that I need to learn more on the subject before I can speak with intelligence about it or make a decision about it.
