If you slime your tubes, is it a waste to carry patches? If the
problem is bigger than slime doesn't that automatically mean that
the tire is not patchable?

I think so. Also, the hassle of stopping, getting the tire off, getting
it back on and the bike back together, means no way do I want to do it
again right away. I'd rather just fit a spare tube.
BTW the spare tube I carry was inflated once before I put it in the
fender bag so I know it holds air.

And if you've had it in a spare tube bag for awhile, check it before any
big trips... says the man who found his spare sufficiently abraded by
his tire irons that he replaced it (probably would have held but I was
leaving for 10days).

THe last time I had a flat, I bought a tube of Slime, emptied it into a
slowly leaking front tube, inflated it , and rode 60+ miles of off road
trails and it held air. Then when I hit the asphalt again, it started
leaking and went flat. After that, I reinflated it, it went flat again, and
then I ended up patching the tube and reinstalling it.
I don't know if I got a bunk tube of slime or what, but it didn't work, and
a patch did.

I certainely wouldn't call 60+miles without losing air a failure.
Especially considering that your use of Slime is definitely neither
advisable nor recommended.

The Slime factory is in my town.
We learned early on, when they started, Don't use slime.
It's a waste of time.

I picked up a roofing nail in the rear tire of my A14. A fellow DS
rider "Slimed" my tire after simply pulling the nail. I completed
the DS ride & rode several thousand miles with that Slime as the only
patch. The tire never loss more air than normal & this with the OEM
inner tubes. I've since upgrade to UH tubes.
I'm not saying "Slime" can fix all problems but it seems more than
adequate for simple punctures. A ripped inner tube is something else
but I hopefully can minimized the chances of that with the UH tubes.

After the flat.
I wouldn't call it a total failure either.
Maybe if I had pre-Slimed the tube in the advised, recommended method it
would have held up better?
The original post asked if you could use a patch on a tire that has been
Slimed and the Slime hasn't sealed the leak.
The answer is yes, you can.

i checked out the gugenheim mc exhibition in july of 2002 if i
recall correctly . it was a good show and we went on the july 4th
weekend . there is a ride that is held each year for old bikes and i
forget the time and the name but there are a lot of old guys that
bring old bikes and ride the desert in the death valley area . i
can't recall anymore info and i know that my description is pretty
sketchy but i have seen the ride advertised in some magazine or
website . ----- by the way , i've been to your website [i think it's
your website] and its a nice website . -------- arthur
