Pretty much identical. Were there specific parts you were looking to swap between the two, or just shopping the parking lots for add-ons for the old '88? Motors will supposedly swap between any year, '87 through '05. The buykawasaki.com website shows different part nos for the two, but the diferences are paint color and maybe a few mounting tabs for the electrics or other accessories. Ronayers.com prices them at $706 for the early and $734 for the newer 2000 model, if that helps you decide which model is preferable. MarkB

doohickey replacement - broken bolt. for inner case

After replacing the doohickey and spring on my 98 KLR (the doohickey was not broken), I began re-assembly. One of the bolts, the short one that fits inside the inner case sheared as I tried to torque it properly. I was able to extract the broken bolt fine but I need to replace the bolt to finish the job. Does anyone know the specs for this bolt. I know it is 8 mm but I need the length. It is Sunday and I would like to finish the job today. I am betting that I can get a suitable replacement at Home Depot rather than have to wait until Tuesday for the bike shop to be open. Thanks for your help.
