Howdy:
I have a 2001 KLR650 that I bought new in 7/00. The bike has
3200mi on it, had it's break in maintainance at the dealer and
regular oil changes. I recently had to top off the oil, about 1/2
qt. I hadn't noticed previous oil useage. This is mc # 9 in 40 years
of cycling. I broke it in carefully and ran it regularly , even in
winter. I live in a rural part of NY and ride more on than off the
road and never in traffic. I'm useinging it more this summer than in
the past, about 500mi in the last month. Is this oil consumption
normal at this stage or do I have a lemon?
Thanks
Sopwith

I put a thousand miles on my '02 last month with no oil consumption. Lemon? I wouldn't say that. Some use more oil than others. Just keep it topped off and ride it. There have been a lot of posts about this recently. Seems there is a lot of variation among KLRs. Some consume little or none; others (like mine) consume quite a bit, but only during freeway cruising. I find that I have to top it off after about 300-400 miles at 75mph. Of course, the top-off amount is only a few ounces. If I forget, the valves rattle on start-up and that reminds me in a hurry. PS: Is "consumotion" a pun???> Is this oil consumption > normal at this stage or do I have a lemon?

Thank's for the reply. Just a typo but I'll gladly take credit for being whitty. Ok I'll keep track of the oil and see what happens. The bike's in new condition and I'm in love with it all over again. At 61 this is my 9th motorcycle and I love ridding as much as I did 40 years ago. sopwith> course, the top-off amount is only a few ounces. With KLR's, there's a wide range of oil consumption.
For reference, here's what mine does. I bought my A14 new &
carefully broke it in. I use Mobil 20W50 synthetic. With my bike
dead on level, I add 8 ozs when the oil level drops to the point it
is visible at the sight glass (I could add 10 ozs to match the level
at 2.5 l but I'm conservative by adding only 8 fl oz.). At 22K miles
mine uses approx. 1 fl oz. / 100 miles & has done this since new.
Since I know what to expect, this isn't a problem. I keep track of
it & can predict when I'm going to need to add some oil. I carry oil
in a graduated camping fuel bottle, which is tough plastic & doesn't
leak. This isn't such a bad thing because fresh oil is added
periodically between total oil changes so I extend oil changes to the
max mileage plus a bit more.
