damaged sidewall-still usable ?

I have a rear avon gripster that somebody poked a razor blade into.
the cut is in the sidewall. It is about 1/4 long and the cut on the
inside is only 1/8 in or so.
The tire has 75 % tread left and I would like to use this tire.
Maybe put a patch over the cut and use thick tubes and ride on.
Any opinions and exerperiences offered?

With significant damage to the sidewall I would not use it.

Replace it - period.
I know you want to recover the cost, and the police, unless you can show
them who did it, are not empowered or inclined to do so. Bigger fish they
must fry. Maybe you'll get lucky/ or benefit from having the detective
bureau in 'good standing' with your matter.
Good luck, and replace the tire. Side wall damage is not repairable in a
proper manner.

Depending on how much flex in the spot there is, patching should do
the trick.
Heck thats how I get my truck tires fixed, have them dismount them,
grind the inside (to promote adhesion) and patch them.
Trust me I get lots of flats (up to 6 on tires with maybe 7,000 miles)
Seems my truck is a nail/screw/unsure on a couple magnet.

Toss a large patch on the inside, squirt some E-6000 on the outside
to cover the hole, stick a Band-Aid on it for shitts and giggles and
ride on. This isn't a tubeless tire we're talking here. That small
of a hole wouldn't even concern me on anything with a tube.
If you're that concerned with it, stick a band-aid on it and keep
on riding to the dealer, shop or police station. They've got
perverts and druggies to worry about, not tiny little tire
punctures. I'd be more concerned about accidentially cutting myself
on that blade and catching something.
IMO, it's not that big a deal unless you want to make it one. Keep
an eye on it, tho. If it gets bigger on it's own, look at putting a
bigger patch on it.

No way. No how. Toss the tire, buy a new one and ride with
confidence. A new tire is far cheaper than a stay in the ICU.

My Etrex Venture has been very satisfactory for the two+ years I've had it.
It has computer interface and works well with either of my notebooks or
wife's desktop. I had some issues trying to get the serial interface to work
with a serial to USB adapter on an earlier notebook but the others work
well.
For software Ozzie Explorer is my favourite and comes highly recommended by
helicopter firms which are customers. Since these guys don't like to get
lost they were my first source for advice. It was a bit of luck when the I
asked the owner of one firm which software he would recommend. He asked me
to come into his office, picked up the phone and made a call, "HI, you're
there then. I'll send Norm over to ask you some questions about GPS and
mapping software. Norm, is 10 minutes from now OK for you? He's in the other
office up the road.." I drove up and the consultant treated me like royalty.
Not surprising since the $100 per hour he was charging to answer my
questions went onto the helicopter firm's bill. (VBG)
A couple of friends have large format GPS units with better screen and more
memory but they are a pain to carry in a pocket and wouldn't fit on the
handle bars. Another friend has a higher end Garmin with more memory and
really nice display. I'd get that one now if buying another one especially
if I was a fat cat real estate sales
