2002 super sherpa no speedometer and odometer

Post by comaqc » Thu Jun 17, 2004 7:42 pm

Just bought a used Super Sherpa 2002 with "no mileage" on it. The odometer reads 0 km and the speedometer does not indicates 0 when I ride the bike. While the bike is in mint conditions, (It really looks as if it had not been ridden 100 miles), it looks as if the odometer is either defective or was purposely put out of order. I checked the pulses out of the pick up coil and there are none,at least using a voltmeter. I could put a scope on it, but I thought that some one out there could provide me with some hints as to what the problem might be. I tried to remove the front wheel to have a closer look at the pick up coil, but I can't even get that far. The pick up coil is stuck on the axle preventing me from unscrewing the axle wiyhout damaging the pick up cable. I have ordered a shop manual but it will be weeks before I receive it. CAn anyone throw some lights on the subject?

Most likely some dipsh*t didn't align the magnet when they put the front wheel on, snapping off the tabs that turn it. The Sherpa speedo uses a magnet and a pickup instead of a gearbox. Nice setup but a little tricky to get together. The part is $15 on ronayers.com, ask me how I know...

The shop manual gives passing mention to the complete b*tch of removing the axle. You need to loosen the pinch block, then hold the wheel into the right fork leg as hard as you can (locking the pickup housing into the tab on the fork slider) while unscrewing the axle from the left slider. Hopefully a coating of grease on the axle will prevent the problem in the future. How's the jetting on yours? I got an '01 Sherpa that falls flat on its face unless the choke is on or it's piping hot. Love the bike for many reasons, but need to tweak the jetting. Devon
