help, declining m/g

I've a Y2k KLR650 with 21.7k mile. I carefully keep records of each
tank full & mileage. Over the past 3k mile I have noted a very
steady, linear decline in my gas mileage. Up to about 18k mile I
average about 51 m/g. Then it began going down hill. Now I'm down
to an average of 45 m/g.
Details totally stock exhaust with Dyno-Jet stage 1 with needle set
one notch richer & idle mixture screw set at 2 turns out. It starts
& runs good but I've noted a bit of wander with the idle setting.
I've had to crank up the throttle position a bit to maintain the idle
speed. I periodical clean my air filter using the No-toil system. I
have a fairly fresh iridium spark plug.
What puzzles me is the slow extremely steady (linear) drop in the
m/g, no sudden step change that occurred when I did something
specific. It's like something is wearing out (horrors!!) or breaking
down.
Anybody got a suggestion where I should start looking for the
problem??

When's the last time you adjusted your valves?

Possible causes or cures: valve adjustment, carb cleaning/inspection,
change in riding habits, different tires, tire pressure, dragging
brakes, binding/worn out chain or sprockets....
45 mpg would still be pretty good in my book. I don't think my '99 ever
got over 50.

Super Fred to the list with his speedy reply...
I concur, if the valves are getting tight, that engine aint breathing.
