I've always wondered how helpful that little screen would be vibrating and bouncing at 40 or 50 mph. I've been looking too, and it seems if you've got the funds the Garmin 176 or 176C is the way to go. But, yeah, who has the $550 laying around, right? I think the Garmin GPS V is coming down in price too, around $300 or so. If you get one of the handheld types, post a blurb on how visible the screen is while riding so I don't have to wonder anymore! Eric in Philly

I posted a pic of my handlebar mount Garmin GPS V. (It's the last one in the photos- not a great picture cause it's dark and rainy right now). I've had it about a year and a half and use it all the time in my car & boat & occasionally handheld. I just recently got the handlebar mount (standard Garmin one) and have no problem seeing it, on the road anyway. It's hooked up to the city light wires with Radio Shack bullet connectors. Don't think I would want to be fiddling with buttons while riding but if you just leave it alone it will show where you are on a map and it keeps a trail of where you've been, so you can always backtrack. On the road it lists the name of the road you're on and tells you the next intersection. The built in base map is good (all of North & South America), though not as detailed as the software you can download into it (it comes with a US/Canada CD). I spent a few weeks in Newfoundland last year and was surprised that the base map included at least the major roads there, even though the CD software cut off the Eastern part of Canada. Sometimes, the base map is not as accurate as it could be- For example in St. John's (Newfoundland) it showed me driving in the harbour when I was definitely still on the road. Anyway, I would recommend the Garmin because it comes with good software and you can get quite a bit more software for it (fishing hot spots, topographical, marine). The screen is a little small, and color would be nice but for me it was a good choice. The only other downside is it is slow to transfer files from your computer (it's plain old serial- not USB). The routing function is nice and it is portable enough to take on business trips and use in rental cars. I love it and find it a very useful tool. John

I have used the Meridian Gold for a couple of years now. I got the bicycle mount from magellan, modified it to fit the thin part of the handle bar, and wired the power supply into the electrical line. Vibration/visibility has never been a problem for me. At this point, I would be hard pressed to live without my gps. I don't have to remember addresses or directions; I just set the device and let it do its job. It's especially useful while camping and exploring, and finding your way back to camp. Always have a back up map, though, in case the device fails! P. --- Eric wrote:

I juast bought a Garmin Etrex Vista and love it. http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexVista/ It uses Garmin Mapsourse and names streets in detail. It also shows lakes, rivers, parks, restaurants, etc. and you can set waypoints and track your route and save it for if you want to go that way again. It is also used for hiking . If you can't afford that the Garmin legend doesn almost the same thing but has 1/3 the memory. I was worried about my garmin etrex vibrating, but I can read it as clear as my speedo and I reply more on it for my speed because the KLR is about 10kph out depending on your speed.

I have the Magellan Meridian color, and use the RAM Mount for handlebars. It works great! I mounted it just to the left of the tach and it is still protected by the windshield. If you want some photos, let me know and I will send them direct. Once I mounted it on the bike, I can't remember what it was like to look down at maps in my tank bag. Josh Dr. Joshua C. I use a map program called Ozi Explorer (www.oziexplorer.com) which is used by professional GPS users. Ozi allows the GPS to download traks, way points and such to and from PC based maps, convert scanned maps, display a live location on a pc based map and other features. One feature which is very useful is that it will correct map errors where several correct GPS locations can be provided. A guy who does GPS and mapping professionally told me that a lot of topo maps aren't nearly as accurate as modern consumer GPS units. If correct lat/long is provided for several points, the program will skew the map so that it matches the correct points. Another feature I use a lot is to place way points on known locations on the PC based map. These points are locations such as mountain peaks, the centre of a cross-road, etc. These points are uploaded to the GPS from Ozi on my PC. When I'm out in the bush I acn use the GPS "Go To" feature to point to that way point for navigation or to allow me to figure out what the name of a mountain is. I checked the cap and it was tight. It turns out that the nipple on top of the tank should of had a hose connected to it in the first place. I ran the bike and warmed it up, there were no bubbles showing up, but the level was higher than normal (over filled from the dealer?). I think that it was just splashing out while riding and getting all over the place. BTW the hose is supposed to go from the tank all the way back to by the tail light (as seen on another A18). It must of been built on a Friday. Now I have to scrub the cooked on blue goo from my pipe. Darren Clark Doug Herr wrote:
