left hand crankshaft bearing failure!

Hi all, new to this list but not to motorcycling. Been riding since 1965. I love em all, even if I don't understand the Harley Davidson mindset. I have crotch rockets, sport tourers, motocrossers, dual sports and vintage. I finally figured out why my `96 KLR sounded like the bottom end was coming apart. That's because the bottom end WAS coming apart! The left hand roller bearing was failing. It was finally revealed to me when I grabbed the magneto/flywheel and moved it up & down over an 1/8th of an inch. It's all apart now and the damage is obvious. It's a damn shame, as the bike was running great and it only has 13K miles on it. I've been using Mobil 1 and the oil consumption had been negligible. My machinist friend suggests that that bearing has an unusually heavy load to bear because of all the balance weights that its driving. I want to share this experience with others to see if there's any collective wisdom available. I'm also seeking parts advice as I'm now debating replacing the whole crankshaft, just the left half or merely fitting a new bearing. Plus a 1/2mm overbore and a valve job just to finish it all off properly. With me doing the labor the parts alone may add up to over 1K. All this for a bike that's only worth a couple thou? Help! i hope all goes well for ya, mine is completely disassembled right now because i had a bearing failure around the output shaft, thankfully it wasn't the main crank bearing like yours, but as i took the engine apart i kept finding more and more problems, from scored cylinder to transmission problems. i am 19 yrs old right now and have never even thought of doing this before i got the klr, when i first got it i used to get the shop to do everything even countersproket changes, but i gave up on that. it is really fun tearing it apart if it only was cheap and i had something else to ride while doing so. anyhow good luck with it, i don't know if you will need it but i know that i will need it with mine so i thought i might as well wish it to ya. later glenski a14 --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Jerry Kaplan" wrote:

Yo, Jerry Was your bike bought new or used? Ever run low on oil before you got it? The crank/case bearing should not fail from driving the infamous balance weights. KHI has been known to use fairly crummy bearings in these areas. Elden Carl - love him or not - takes all his used engines apart and upgrades all the bearings. all the best, Mike Eagle Mfg & Eng San Diego, Ca since 1990 --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Jerry Kaplan" wrote:
