Dear Members:
I recently purchased 2" lowering links for my 2004 KLR650 from Happy
Trails.
I notice that the stock seat gets very warm when riding in warm or
hot weather. Is this normal? Is it the result of the lowering
links? Is there another seat that I can order that will become less
warm when riding on on warm or hot days?
This question may seem stupid so please forgive my ignorance. I am
a beginner motorcyclist.
Thank you.

Have you tried taking the seat off right after a ride?
I can't imagine the lowering links causing anything to heat up unless
you have something rubbing, but I think you'd notice/hear that.
There is really nothing under the seat anyway - battery and airbox??
I'd pop off the sidepanels, remove the seat bolts temporarily and go
for a quick ride. Soon as you feel heat, stop, pop off the seat and see what's up.

I cant see how the seat gets warmer because of lowering links. maybe
you have been sitting on it, thats why it feels hot. if your pants
dont let air through, than it will make you feel hotter. cotton (like
jeans)is good for sitting on the klr, but not for crashing
hot seat.

What color is the seat? If it's a dark color, yes, it's normal. There are
two possible solutions: a) cover the seat with a white towel when you have
to park it in the sun (note: appropriate bungee/velcro solution to keep
said towel from flying away left to the reader), or b) get your seat
re-upholstered in a light grey or something else that won't heat up as
much.
Other than that, there's not much to be done about it. The laws of physics
are the laws of physics, and the laws of physics say that dark-colored
stuff heats up when it's left out in the sun :-}.

Without lowering links, if the temp is 80 or better, my seat gets
really hot too, particularly if I'm not moving over 40mph. It's just
the airflow I believe. I wouldn't 'sweat' it.

Try a sheep skin cover, or just throw a sheep skin (wool side up) over the seat. It makes the seat warmer in the cold and cooler when hot. Maybe that's why sheep never seem to sweat?

Hi Thane,
I have tried both the white single concave LEDs and an amber 6 LED
cluster bulb.
The single concaves are just adequate; you could probably get better
performance from the single concaves if you remove the shields from
inside the instrument housing. The amber 6 LED cluster bulb really
does well and only costs $.50 more.
The also have a brighter white 6 LED cluster bulb for $1.50 more than
that, but I think white LEDs in general are too cold and the amber
one more closely resembles the stock incandescent bulb.
