breakdown in boston on a 1994 xr650l

I'm in a predicament. I was riding up from NYC to Boston on my 1994 XR650L the rear wheel locked up outside of Worster on the Mass Pike. The bike would not go into neutral. The bike and final drive/chain rotates forward and reverse when I push the bike. Both forward and reverse motion stops after rolling two or three feet. When I opened the oil value I smelled a faint burning smell. The oil level was a bit low. She had been running fine for over 150 miles. I had the bike towed to International Motorsports in Auburn, 508-832- 5296. They did a preliminary check for $59. The results are shift linkage-OK, compression-OK, Leak down-Bad, with 80% leakage. I think there may be two problems. A top end leak and perhaps a broken gear. Now, I just moved to Boston and don't have any buddies to help me out. I have limited experience with fixing bikes. I put a new clutch in last summer and have all the basic maintenance under my belt. I have three options: 1. pay them 3 hours to remove the engine and diagnose the source of pressure leak. Then pay for the parts and installation. 2. pay them 3 hours to remove the engine and diagnose the source of pressure leak. Then take the bike in parts and repair it myself. 3. take the bike now and work on it myself. Are there any suggestions or volunteers in the Boston area who might like to help me out? Justin
