I bought a 2000 KLR last fall in California. It made some very loud
and concerning backfiring on deacceleration. It needed new tires so
while I was at the Kawy shop they sold me a Dynajet kit to install
to remedy the problem.
Well, the bike doesn't like lifting off idle and only runs on full
choke. I have had the carb on and off enough to be a certified
mechanic now. Any thoughts or suggestions on getting this thing to
run well. Also, I cannot get to the main jet while the carb is
installed. I called Kawasaki and they don't have a specialty tool
available. I even ordered a specialty ratchet type screw driver from
BMW but it does not fit. The shank is too tall.

any other mods to the intake or exhaust?
what jet size and needle clip position are you using?
Motion Pro makes main jet wrenches that are VERY compact, yet the handle
holds spare jets. part number 08-0025 is for 6mm round jets, suggested reta=
il
is $5.30. see
www.motionpro.com for a pic.
Motion Pro also makes a 90 screwdriver that would be handy for adjusting
the pilot jet, or Fred at
www.arrowheadmotorsports.com sells a thumb
adjustable pilot jet needle.
finally, get yourself one of Krokko's carb screw kits, it's $6 shipped and =
replaces all the crappy factory screws with nice allen head stuff in stainl=
ess.
see

also, you shouldn't need to remove the carb, just try rotating it to one si=
de,
but you'll still want to remove thechoke cabel.
finally, here's a great overview of the CVK-40 carb-

.............I got it from Odyssey_world via eBay for $56.95 about three
months ago. It looks like they're going for even less now. They usually have
a new auction each week, and right now there's one "Buy-it-now" for $53, or
take your chance and bid for $51 opening.........

........1 day and 5 hours left on this one. Add $11 S&H and your total would
be $64 if you "Bought-it-now". Mine came in only a few days. It is not the
MJ "metal jacket" version (more expensive, not necessary, and maybe a
tighter fit problem). The only "mod" necessary is to add an extension to the
lower terminal as they are on the side instead of the top. They come fully
charged (mine was a robust 12.84V out of the box, and has remained so after
three months use in the cold).
I had this same battery in the old Mule (my previous KLR) for two years
(until it was snatched) with no problems. I got a feeling this battery lasts
many years (like they say) and it's totally maintenance-free (sealed). One
less thing to worry about when you're in the middle of nowhere. Has a higher
than stock crank rating to boot, and it feels it when you just "touch" the
start button. Great investment for the price of a regular battery (or less
in some cases!).
I'm gushing about this thing, I know..........but I REALLY have no
connection to Hawker/Odyssey or the vendor.
