I've been as high as 300 miles before going on reserve, but the norm is around 275 with my A16 (9000 + miles). Since mine wasn't new when I bought it (3114 miles), I can't comment on the out-of the-crate mileage, but I suspect that it will get better as things loosen up. Interesting...If I switch to reserve, and immediately fill up, it usually takes 4.7 or so. Where are others' reserves at? I don't fill right to the brim 'cause it's a CA model, but I come pretty close, definitely nowhere near 0.4 gallons worth.

My reserve kicks in at about 4.4 gallons, and filled to the brim besides. Its not a Ca tank, and I'm wondering if the inline filter is preventing me from using all of the capacity. ~265 miles to reserve, and about 20 miles later I have to tilt the bike to the left to pick up more gas. I am heavy on the throttle and go on reserve usually about 210 miles. I am amazed at getting 265 miles until reserve. I will try and stay off the throttle for this next round of gas and see what happens. I guess you all are all stock? Mick A10

A non working speedometer is a not uncommon problem on the KLR, and one main reason is as follows. The RECEIVER-SPEEDOMETER part #41064 which you can see on the following web site, www.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/oem.asp? submit_from_stage=1§ion_dept_id=1 . Enter the information identifying you particular motorcycle,, and once there choose the schematic/diagram of the Front Hub. The receiver is the washer like piece that interfaces between the front wheel axle and the GEAR-METER SCREW / CASE-ASSY-METER GEAR / SPEEDOMETER CABLE. It's two metal tabs position into the gear-meter screw, and when the front axle turns, the receiver transfers that movement to the gear-meter screw and in turn to the speedometer cable. In the event your front axle takes a hit, these two tabs on the receiver can bend and fail to engage the gear-meter screw causing the speedometer cable to not turn. You can purchase a replacement receiver for less then $7.00 on-line and use it to replace the receiver with the bent tabs, or you can just remove your front axle, take out the receiver, lay it on a flat surface such as an anvil, and using a hammer and a few light taps, bend the two tabs back straight, and you should be able to re-use the receiver, allowing your speedometer to work properly once again.
