klr600 questions

This link is very interesting, and I must admit has me drooling, but I am also looking at a KLR 600 as a mostly desert use bike with only short asphalt trips to get to the dirt. It is an 85 model and very stock. Any comments on its off road abilities? Being an "old guy" I am not looking at doing triples, but do enjoy some spirited riding.
