Hello All,
Thanks for all the help with my recent suspension inquiries.
I've got a new problem. My speedometer/odometer etc just up and quit.
Any common problems that I should look for first?

The cable has come loose on my A18 twice now. You may
want to check on that.

Don, the cable may have just disconnected at the hub
or (usually) behind the guage. If so, I would
carefully use a pair of robogrip pliers to tighten the
knurled knob just beyond finger-tight (try to not slip
and ruin the knurling). If that wasn't it, undo both
ends, turn one end by hand and see if the other end
turns freely or if it is broken in half (it'll usually
just pull-out easily then).
If all that checks-out and still no go, then you need
to remove the front wheel to check the speedo drive
mechanism. The speedo drive unit is essentially 3
pieces, the main unit containing the driven gear, a
drive gear and a tabbed washer. It can be inspected,
cleaned and packed w/grease. IMPORTANT: make sure that
the tabbed washer is engaged w/the slots in the wheel
hub when reassembling, or bad things happen. Check for
the spacer on the other side. Also note that there is
a proper angle for the unit relative to cable position
and that the slot on the cable engages a tab in the
drive (you may have to rotate wheel to align).
If the drive unit were ok, the only thing left would
be the guage itself, which I doubt. I'm betting on the
cable being disconnected

Right, but changing the MC and not changing anything else wouldn't help
much. A stainless hose would be necessary if you were going to use a
smaller MC. And a smaller MC piston magnifies any air bubbles in the
system, so you need to bleed it thoroughly.
I can pull the lever to the bar on my '81 SR500, but after 1/2 travel
it's just caliper flex. One finger only until the tires warm up, then
two fingers.
