Interesting read. It appears to be hearsay-heavy. The article does not quote what regulation the officers are citing. That is the key to the whole "controversy". Many / most cages these days have plastic gas tanks from the factory, too. Chris Elledge Roanoke, VA

You know, when I hear stories like this about law enforcement going hard after some miniscule regulatory offense like this one, I think...man, I wish we would have had that kind of time and manpower. I just retired with over 30 years in LE, and the last 6 of it was in charge of our P.D.'s traffic division--a municipal agency. I guess some of the federal enforcement agencies have this kind of time and resource to pursue this kind of regulatory offense, but most LE agencies sure don't. I'd bet our federal border patrol folks would like to get a little of that resource in their duties down on the Mexico and Canadian borders watching for drug and terrorism targets. There are definitely "quality of life" issues for all of us that involve small, regulatory offenses that should be pursued. None of us want knuckleheaded neighbors playing loud music all night, or parking their cars in a way that block access to our driveway. These are small but important issues, because they really do affect someone else. Let's assume a plastic gas tank is illegal (sidebar: I'm not aware of anything other than a DOT manufacturer's regulation involving plastic or steel motorcycle tanks. It is not a state or local law in Texas--for sure.) Anyway, are there cases of plastic tanked motorcycles crashing or having some failure related to the tank that is resulting in fires that might threaten forest land? If so, this would then be a reasonable cause to pursue such a law. Otherwise why waste time and manpower pursuing such a mundane issue? I'm sure many of us read outdoor related articles and magazines, especially related to motorcycling, but I can't say I've seen or even remotely heard anything about the "Attack of the Plastic Gas Tanks". The motivation for the fool's pursuit described here must be based on something else. Maybe it is a personal vendetta by one or more LE folk with too much time on their hands and not enough good judgement to focus it in a more important area of their responsibilities. On the other hand, I wonder if these officer(s) are being encouraged by supervision to pursue a sort of "scorched earth" enforcement effort because of pressure from citizens, environmental groups, or other entities? Either way it's obviously a shameful waste of LE resource, especially in a time of federal, state, and local budget concerns. I too would like to see the statute that prohibits an individual from operating a motorcycle with a plastic gas tank on a public road or public access area. At least Texas hasn't gone "law looney" on this subject. There is absolutely no real safety issue with plastic gas tanks as we know them, and to pursue enforcement issues for such a silly issue makes LE look stupid and ruins the hard work and credibility that most LE folk work to establish. Law enforcement is a bad career field for small, vindictive people to choose--bad for all of us. Thad Carey A15

klr 650 thermostat from an auto parts store??

The thermostat for our John Deere Gator is an exact match for my thermostat. Comes in a pretty green and yellow box. Kawasaki motor, watercooled, stocked. When it wasn't stocked, 2 days. (((((Does this guarantee you'll find one local?))))) No. The guy could have been bullsheeting me, but he had the part in 2 days. The part I needed, for a price I could afford. If you'd ordered from Fred (one of the list's premier KLR parts stockers) you'd probably have them by now. Order by monday, have them whole way cross country by thursday at the latest. Order Friday, there monday. Get what I'm saying? If it's required that you have to use your local dealer, move. If he tells you that you have to order from him to keep warranty, look him straight in the eye and yell BULLSHIT!. He's breaking the law. Fred: www.arrowheadmotorsports.com Probably had those items in stock, could have had them in the mail, and you could be out riding. Just because the dealer says "you have to use me for parts" you listen to him? Internet, and the wonders thereof! Literally several hundred dealers online that could help you out in days, rather than weeks. Ron Ayers in NC also sells Kawasaki parts online. www.ronayers.com Ordered parts for my 22 year old Suzuki on Monday, they'll be here tomorrow. Not a stocked item either. They had to order it from Japan. www.bikebandit.com These are just 3 examples of who I've used in the past 2 weeks. millerized I don't mean to be harsh, but it's a motorcyle for Christs sake. Not a human body. You can find parts that'll fit if you just look, ask and experiment. Just about any hardware store worth it's name brand will have simple stuff. Please don't be like the guy who's dealer told him he couldn't go to a hardware store and buy a bolt for his gas tank hold downs. He waited I don't know how long for this single bolt to come in, afraid to ride it.
