Show me the Math!!! That facts speak for themselves I ride everyday for
last 20 odd years.
You sound like the guy in the Apple shop. I am after a cover for my
Ipod and pick up the clear cover from the rack and pass it to the
counter assistant to pay for it. He looks on his computer and says "
are you sure you don't want the blue one? We don't have any clear
ones!!!" I say "no thanks the clear one in your hand will be just fine".
"Ok" he says "I just have to sell you this one and record it as a blue
one".
BTW the 50m was a little exaggeration it is more like 1854mm. Enough for
the car to out of my way by the time I get there travelling at
30000mm/sec. My hearing is fine. Can you repeat the rest of your
message I didn't hear what you said.

8-12db of sound proofing hear you? And if it's that loud, how the hell
can you stand to ride the bike? By your account, it's magically making
enough sound in the forward direction (even though the majority of the
sound is actually propagating rearward) that at 50m it's somewhere in
the neighborhood of 90+db. DB drop at 50m is ~34db, so at your bike
you're cranking out nearly 124db, and that's in the wrong direction. I
have no idea how one calculates reverse propagation of a unidirectional
sound source without a reference reflective surface, but regardless of
the technical details, to scare a car at 50m means that your exhaust has
to be so loud that even with earplugs you're damaging your hearing for
most any ride of insignifcant length.
Until a loud pipe advocate actually shows the math and that the math
checks, it's all bull-paddy.
MCN just had an article debunking this myth of exhaust sound being able
to travel far enough forward and at significantly high volume to warn
cars of your presence.
Show the math, then I'll believe you, and until then loud pipes do
nothing but lose rights. I would bet that the 950's height and
headlights, not to mention whatever gear you might be wearing, play a
far greater part in your ability to part the waters than your exhaust
does...

?! Wait a minute, what facts?
Your logic does not follow, but then again that's usually the case with
the loud pipe and anti-helmet crowd, so it's not surprising.
And how exactly does the iPod story support your loud pipe facts? Just
curious because it appears completely tangential.

geez cant we get off this loud pipe kick... im sure the people
that argue against a louder or better sounding pipe never used such a
thing right ?? some of you guys are a little overboard on this topic
( not pointing fingers ) ive read back over the topic and this is my
opinion.. let each rider make their own opinion as to what they want
and let it go you are not going to change a guys mind on here anyway.

Nah this is too much fun... I'm sick of shuffling through brain-dead
NKLR politics and the "Should I change my doohickey" posts. At this
represents something different to talk about on the list than oils,

No generalising. In OZ we are all for helmets be it for skateboards,
roller blades bicycles.
My point was that if the calculator says 2+2 =5 then it must be right.
The fact that you have four apples in hand means nothing.
In my world the facts are, same roads, same bikes, same cars, same
drivers. I know that cars can tell I'm behind them with a pipe that is
not virtually silent (as most stock pipes are with helmet on or windows
up).
That fact that stock pipes are made for one sole purpose and that is to
keep the noise down at the compromise of engine performance and weight
is enough of a factor to ditch for me. I would rather pay less money
for a better product than keep the weighty crappy expensive inhibiting
original pipe on.
There's plenty of noisier, more polluting less environmentally friendly
people out there than me. I'm doing my bit by riding to work on a fuel
miser. No 6 litre gas guzzling V8 for me? My bike uses less rubber,
less oil, less road, less manufacturing. Compromise you bet I want to
hear my bike and have it perform the way it was designed to perform not
the way local regulators want it designed.
Do you still leave you bike running lean because that's the way your
local authorities require it?

I agree that the thread has grown tiresome. Unfortunately, when riding
areas get taken away because of noise, everyone isn't entitled to their
opinion if it means they have to ride a noisemaker.
I rode what might be one of the last Sandy Lane Enduros in south NJ
yesterday. This ride has been going on for 70-odd years now, and it
looks like they won't have the land available in the future, some
private, and some parkland on a special-use permit. Mainly because of
noise issues.
Loud pipes do not equal speed, or increased safety. They inspire the
non-riding public to take away our rights at every opportunity. Your
loud pipe today means I lose riding areas tomorrow. The people who turn
and look as someone drives by with a loud pipe, are mostly thinking what
an asshole he is and how stupid he looks.

I think you mean "after" someone drives by with a loud pipe. Certainly
while driving a cage (something I do not infrequently, because you
just can't haul some kinds of climbing equipment around on a bike; not
two perople's worth anyway) I have *never* noticed the noise from a loud
motorcycle until that bike was alreadyA next to or past me.
I'm sure the idiots with their bored-out dragster "LOUD PIPES SAVE
LIVES MAN!!!!!!1!!!" pipes were sure the reason I turned and looked
-- as or after they'd already gone by -- was that their loud pipes
had seized my attention as they rode up behind me and mystically commanded
me to stare at them until they were long gone. Sure. Right.
If you spend most of your time being overtaken by cars in the slow lane,
maybe all that sound coming out the ass end of your LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES
MAN!!! "muffler" gets you some extra attention. Otherwise, however, its
_only_ effect is to harm every single other rider of road and trail by
making all of us seem like inconsiderate fools chasing a mystique built
up by movies made by people who didn't even ride anyhow.

I have a waterproof duffel from Sportsman's Guide that I'm pretty happy
with. I like it well enough that if I were buying again I'd probably
shell out a bit more for a non-camo version.
